Chapter 5 - The ConfrontationEleanor stepped into the room, her designer heels clicking softly against the linoleum floor. She glanced briefly at Clara on the bed, her face a cool, unreadable mask, before turning her sharp eyes to me.

"Ethan," Eleanor said quietly. "I got a call from your aunt saying you rushed to the emergency room. Why didn't you call me immediately?"

I slowly stood up from the chair. The exhaustion, the grief, and the burning rage inside me pooled into a single, lethal focus.

"Get out," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it was laced with a coldness that made Eleanor pause.

Eleanor frowned, holding her handbag tighter. "Ethan, don't be ridiculous. I am your mother. I came here to support you during this stressful time. I hear the child is in intensive care—"

"His name is Leo," I interrupted, taking a step toward her. "And the woman lying in that bed, fighting for her life, is my wife."

"Ethan, please," Eleanor sighed, shaking her head patronizingly. "I know you are emotional right now. But you need to look at this rationally. I warned you months ago about Clara. Her family has baggage, genetic complications, financial instability—"

"You went to her behind my back!" I growled, stepping directly into her space, forced to look down at her. "You hired a private investigator to dig through her family's medical records! You cornered her, threatened her, and tried to drive a wedge between us while she was six months pregnant!"

Eleanor’s eyes flickered with a brief moment of surprise before she hardened her posture. "I was protecting you! I was protecting our family's future! Look where her secrecy got you tonight! She kept things from you!"

"She kept things from me because she was terrified of what you would do to our marriage!" I shouted, no longer caring if I woke up the floor. "She bore the terrifying weight of a genetic test alone because she loved me too much to stress me out during my company launch! And tonight, because she fell and tried to save herself, I walked into our bedroom and spent sixty seconds believing your poison instead of trusting the woman I swore to love!"

Eleanor stepped back, startled by the sheer fury in my voice. "Ethan, I am your mother—"

"Not anymore," I said, my voice dead calm.

Eleanor froze. "What did you just say?"

"If Clara doesn't pull through... if my son doesn't make it... I will never look at your face again," I said, staring directly into her eyes. "And even if they both walk out of this hospital completely healthy, you will never be allowed near my son. You will never set foot in my home. You are cut off from my life, Eleanor. Entirely."

"You can't mean that," Eleanor gasped, her pristine composure finally cracking, panic showing in her eyes. "Over her? Over a girl who brought nothing to your life?"

"She brought everything to my life," I said, pointing a finger toward the hallway. "Now get out of my wife's room before I have security drag you out."

Eleanor stared at me, realizing for the first time in thirty years that she had lost all control over her son. She opened her mouth to speak, but seeing the absolute ice in my eyes, she turned on her heel and hurried out into the corridor.

I stood there, shaking, breathing heavily. I turned back to Clara’s bed, sat down in the chair, and took her cold hand back in mine.

"She's gone, Clara," I whispered, resting my head beside her arm. "She will never hurt us again. I promise you."
