Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Family TreeThirty minutes later, the waiting room doors swung open, and Sarah rushed in, her hair pulled into a messy bun, her coat half-buttoned.

"Where is she? Where’s Clara?" Sarah asked frantically.
"She’s in surgery," I said, my voice hoarse. "Emergency C-section. There was a fall... so much blood, Sarah. I was away on a business trip, I came home early and..." I broke down, unable to finish the sentence.
Sarah sat beside me, wrapping her arm around my shoulders. "Hey, look at me, Ethan. Clara is strong. She’s fought through worse than this. She’s going to make it. Both of them are."
I looked at Sarah, the guilt eating my stomach alive. "Sarah... I need to ask you something. And I need you to be completely honest with me."
Sarah blinked, confused. "What is it?"
"My mother... three weeks ago, she told me I didn't know everything about Clara. And tonight, before I realized she was hurt, I... I saw blood, I saw her nightgown inside out, I saw our picture broken, and for a horrible minute, I thought..." I couldn't bring myself to say the word cheating. "I thought she was keeping secrets from me."
Sarah’s face changed. The warmth in her eyes vanished, replaced by a tight, guarded look. She lowered her head and let out a long breath.
"Your mother is a bitter, manipulative woman, Ethan," Sarah said quietly. "But she wasn't lying about Clara having secrets."
My heart did a terrifying drop. "What?"
"It’s not what you think!" Sarah said quickly, grabbing my arm. "God, Ethan, no! Clara loves you more than life itself! She would never, ever touch another man!"
"Then what secrets?" I demanded, my hands shaking. "Why was my mother poking around into her life?"
Sarah looked around the empty waiting room before leaning in close.
"Two months ago, Eleanor came to Clara’s workplace," Sarah revealed softly. "She brought a private investigator’s file. Eleanor had been digging into our family’s medical history. She discovered that our mother didn't die of a simple heart attack like we told everyone. Our mother suffered from a rare, hereditary vascular condition... one that carries a 50% chance of being passed down to her daughters."
I stared at Sarah, completely frozen. "Vascular condition?"
"It makes pregnancy extremely high-risk," Sarah whispered, tears forming in her eyes. "It causes brittle blood vessels and severe clotting issues. When Clara found out, she went to a specialist in secret because she didn't want to terrify you while you were pitching your new company. She wanted to get tested first. Your mother threatened to tell you that Clara was 'broken' and unfit to carry an heir to your family name if Clara didn't tell you herself."
The truth hit me like a physical blow.
Clara hadn't been sneaking around with another man. She had been sneaking around to medical specialists, carrying the terrifying burden of a potential fatal genetic condition all by herself, just to protect me from worrying while I was building our future. And my mother had used that secret as a knife to twist in her back.

Before I could digest the crushing weight of Sarah's words, the heavy doors to the operating wing pushed open.
Dr. Reed walked out, covered in surgical scrubs, her face exhausted.
