Chapter 6 - The New DynastyThe city had changed, and so had we.

The grand reopening of the historic Northside cultural center—funded entirely by a mysterious philanthropic trust managed jointly by myself and Julian—was the premier event of the season.
I stood on the second-floor balcony of the newly restored ballroom, wearing a backless crimson silk gown that commanded every eye in the room. No longer hiding behind someone else's shadow, no longer managing polite smiles for corrupt men, I watched the glittering crowd below with a cool, confident assurance.
Footsteps approached softly behind me. A familiar scent of cedar, rain, and bourbon wrapped around my shoulders.
Julian stood beside me, resting his hands on the polished mahogany railing, looking out over the ballroom. He wore a sharp black tuxedo, looking every bit the sovereign ruler of the city's shadows.
"The board approved the expansion of the arts district," Julian said quietly, turning his head to look at me. "Your name is on the plaque at the entrance. The real one. Not your husband's."
I smiled, leaning my shoulder against his chest. "Good. Because I'm done living under borrowed names."
May you like
Julian slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me firmly against him, his lips brushing against my ear. "You never have to borrow anything again, Diane. Everything I own—everything in this city—belongs to both of us."
Downstairs, the orchestra struck up a slow, sweeping waltz. The crowd parted instinctively as Julian led me down the grand staircase, every eye in the room turning in our direction. We weren't a scandal anymore. We were a dynasty.
