Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the House of ValeThe mansion in the suburbs no longer looked like a home; it looked like a tomb.

When I walked through the heavy front doors late that Tuesday evening, the silence was absolute. The art collection, the designer furniture, the imported marble countertops—it all felt hollow, stripped of the false dignity I had projected onto it for over a decade.

Marcus was sitting in the dark study, a half-empty glass of scotch in his hand, his usually immaculate hair disheveled, his silk tie ripped open at the collar.

"You did this," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking as the front door clicked shut behind me. He didn't look up from his desk. "Your little stunt with Vance... it triggered a federal audit. The SEC is freezing our assets. The board voted me out three hours ago."

I walked into the study, stopping right in front of his desk. I didn't feel pity. I didn't even feel anger. I felt a cold, liberating emptiness.

"You built an empire on lies, Marcus," I said evenly. "You sold my brother's life for a zoning permit, you spent two years sleeping behind my back, and you had the absolute arrogance to call an open marriage a 'generous arrangement'."

Marcus snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot, panic giving way to a desperate, ugly fury. "You think Vance cares about you? You think a monster like that knows how to love someone? He's using you to destroy me, Diane! The moment I'm broken, he'll throw you away like a broken toy!"

"Julian knows every single thing you've done," I replied, my voice slicing through his panic like a scalpel. "Including what you did to David."

The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face. He stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the hardwood floor. "What... what did you say?"

"You heard me," I said, stepping closer. "The audit isn't just about stock manipulation. It's about the illegal land seizures, the payoffs, the falsified coroner's reports. Julian didn't just target your company, Marcus. He brought the entire architecture of your crimes down around your ears."

Panic overtook him completely. Marcus lunged across the desk, his hand shooting out to grab my wrist with brutal force. "You treacherous bitch—I'll ruin you! I'll make sure you leave this house with nothing! Not a dime, not a car, not a scrap of—"

Crash.

The study door didn't open; it exploded inward, splintering wood flying across the Persian rug.

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, two of Julian’s elite bodyguards had him pinned facedown against the mahogany desk, their arms twisted behind his back with bone-crushing force.

Julian stepped into the room, adjusting his cuffs, his face carved from ice. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"Put your hands on her again, Marcus," Julian said, his voice a lethal whisper, "and you won't live long enough to see the inside of a federal penitentiary."

Marcus whimpered, his face pressed against the wood, completely neutralized by the raw, terrifying power standing before him.

Julian walked past him without a second glance, stopping right in front of me. His expression softened instantly, the dark fury vanishing, replaced by a quiet, steady warmth. He reached out, gently loosening Marcus’s grip from my wrist, and pulled my hand up to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my knuckles.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked quietly.

"I'm better than alright," I said, looking down at my trembling husband pinned to his own desk. "I'm finally free."
