Chapter 5 - The Ashes of YesterdayThe federal indictment against Marcus Vale made national headlines by Friday morning. Fraud, insider trading, corporate embezzlement, and obstruction of justice—charges that carried a minimum of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole.

By Saturday afternoon, the sprawling suburban estate was surrounded by federal marshals and asset-seizure teams. I packed a single leather suitcase, walking through the empty rooms where I had spent eleven years playing the dutiful, silent wife. I left the jewelry, the designer dresses, and the gilded accessories behind. They belonged to Diane Vale, the socialite who didn't exist anymore.

When I walked out the front doors for the last time, a matte-black Maybach was waiting at the curb.

The rear door opened, and Julian stepped out, holding an umbrella against the gentle spring mist. He didn't take my suitcase; instead, he held out his hand, his eyes searching mine with a quiet, patient intensity.

"Where to?" Julian asked softly.

"Somewhere far away from marble floors and glass chandeliers," I said, sliding my hand into his.

We spent the next three months traveling off the grid—from the rugged, windswept cliffs of the Pacific Northwest to a secluded villa overlooking the Mediterranean. For the first time in my life, there were no charity boards to manage, no guest lists to curate, and no lies to maintain. In Julian’s world, there was no pretense, no artificial polish—only absolute loyalty, raw protection, and a passion that burned away every ghost of my past.

Julian didn't ask me to be his society queen; he asked me to be his partner. He opened the books of his entire enterprise, sharing every risk, every secret, and every triumph. The underworld whispered about the ruthless syndicate boss who had finally met his match—a woman who didn't fear his darkness, but walked right into the fire beside him.

By late autumn, the legal proceedings against Marcus were finalized. His assets were liquidated, his name was struck from the corporate registry, and the House of Vale vanished into the dustbin of history.
