Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Over ManhattanThe first rays of golden October sunlight crept over the horizon of the East River, painting the Manhattan skyline in brilliant shades of amber, rose, and gold.

Inside Ethan’s executive suite, the city below was slowly waking up, beginning its frantic, bustling day. But up here, on the sixtieth floor, time stood entirely still.
I sat curled up on the oversized leather sofa, wrapped in Ethan’s cashmere blanket, holding a mug of hot coffee that he had personally brewed for me an hour ago. Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, watching the sunrise with a cup of black coffee in his hand, his tuxedo jacket discarded hours ago.
The federal indictment against Andrew Vaughn was already making morning news headlines across every major news network in the country. “Miracle Surgeon Arrested in Stunning Federal Corruption and Abuse Scandal,” blared the banner across CNN. The Carter Foundation had already issued a public statement severing all ties with Vaughn and announcing an emergency endowment fund dedicated to supporting victims of domestic abuse.
The storm had passed. The wreckage had been cleared.
Ethan turned away from the window and walked over, sitting down on the coffee table right in front of the sofa so he was looking up at me at eye level.
"How are you holding up?" he asked softly, his gray eyes filled with tender concern.
"I feel like I'm breathing fresh air for the first time in my life," I admitted, offering him a small, genuine smile. "My apartment... my things are still at Andrew's place. I'll need to arrange movers, or—"
"Don't worry about the apartment," Ethan interrupted, reaching out to take my hand. "My legal team has already secured a court order preventing him or his representatives from accessing the property. And my security detail is packing up your belongings as we speak. They'll be delivered to a secure location by noon."
I looked down at our joined hands. "Ethan... you don't have to keep taking care of me like this. I can stand on my own two feet now."
"I know you can, Ava," Ethan said, his voice firm and unwavering. "You're the strongest, most resilient person I've ever met. But that doesn't mean you have to do it alone anymore. Unless... unless you want me to back off."
I shook my head, feeling a sudden surge of warmth in my chest. "I don't want you to back off."
A slow, breathtaking smile broke across Ethan’s face—a smile I had rarely seen him flash in public, reserved only for moments of genuine, unguarded happiness.
"Good," he murmured, sliding his hand up to cup the back of my neck and pulling me gently toward him. "Because I don't intend on going anywhere."
When his lips met mine, it wasn't rushed or desperate. It was soft, deliberate, and filled with the promise of everything we had beiden waiting for over the past year. Every wall I had built, every scar I had carried, seemed to dissolve beneath the gentle heat of his kiss.

When we finally pulled apart, resting our foreheads together in the quiet morning light, I knew that whatever came next—whether it was the media circus, the upcoming federal trial, or the daunting task of rebuilding my life—I was ready to face it.
Because for the first time in as long as I could remember, I wasn't hiding anymore.
