Chapter 3 - The Gala Aftermath and the Hidden DossierThe applause that followed Andrew’s acceptance speech was deafening. He had spoken with eloquence, painting a picture of pediatric suffering and medical triumph that brought several wealthy donors in the front row to tears. When he stepped down from the podium, he was swarmed by society matrons, hospital administrators, and reporters eager for a soundbite.

I stood near the edge of the VIP seating area, holding a glass of sparkling water I hadn't touched, desperately trying to blend into the woodwork.
"Ava."
The low, familiar voice brushed against my ear. I turned to find Andrew standing beside me, his arm sliding around my waist with practiced, suffocating intimacy. To the dozen photographers lingering nearby, he looked like the doting, affectionate fiancé showing his future bride to the world.
To me, his fingers digging into the tender, bruised flesh of my ribs felt like a vise grip.
"Smile, sweetheart," Andrew murmured out of the corner of his mouth, keeping his radiant, teeth-baring grin fixed on a reporter from the New York Times snapping photos twenty feet away. "You look like you're attending a funeral. Fix your face before someone writes an article about how miserable my fiancée looks on the best night of my career."
"I'm just tired, Andrew," I whispered, wincing as his fingers pressed harder into my side.
"You're tired?" he hissed softly, leaning down as if whispering sweet nothings into my hair. "You sit at a desk all day while I operate for fourteen hours saving lives, and you're tired? You better snap out of this sullen attitude before we get home, Ava, or I'll remind you what real exhaustion feels like."
A cold sweat broke out across the back of my neck. I forced my lips to curve upward into a stiff, trembling facsimile of a smile for the benefit of the cameras flashing around us.
Suddenly, a tall, imposing figure materialized beside us.
Ethan Carter.
He held a glass of scotch in one hand, his tuxedo immaculate, his presence instantly dominating the space around us. The reporters backing away gave him immediate, reverent berth.
"Dr. Vaughn," Ethan said, his voice smooth, deep, and carrying an undercurrent of razor-sharp steel.
Andrew’s expression instantly transformed into one of eager, obsequious gratitude. He released my waist—thank God—and turned to face the billionaire tech titan, extending his hand.
"Mr. Carter! Incredible evening. Your opening speech was nothing short of visionary. Thank you for your continued support of the cardiovascular wing."
Ethan did not take Andrew’s outstretched hand.
Instead, Ethan slowly raised his glass of scotch, swirling the amber liquid inside, his gray eyes locked onto Andrew with a chilling, predatory stillness. The hand hanging at Andrew’s side hovered awkwardly in the air for a moment before Andrew slowly, nervously pulled it back.
"It's a pleasure to support the hospital, Doctor," Ethan said smoothly, though every word dripped with ice. "Especially when we have such... remarkable talent operating within its walls. I was just telling my assistant, Ava, how fascinated I am by the hidden lives of our city's most celebrated heroes."
Andrew’s polite smile twitched. His blue eyes darted nervously toward me for a fraction of a second before snapping back to Ethan. "Ah, yes. Ava is an exceptional assistant. She keeps Carter Industries running like clockwork, I'm sure."
"She does," Ethan agreed softly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "She manages my schedule, protects my interests, and ensures nothing slips through the cracks. In fact, she's so good at her job that she often notices things other people try very hard to hide."
The air between the two men grew heavy, charged with a silent, violent current that made the surrounding guests instinctively take a step back.
Andrew’s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. "I... I'm not sure I follow, Mr. Carter."
"You will, Doctor," Ethan replied, his voice dropping into a quiet, menacing register that only the three of us could hear. "You will very soon."
Before Andrew could formulate a response, Ethan turned his gaze toward me. The coldness in his eyes instantly melted into something soft, warm, and unbearably tender.
"Ava, you look pale. Let me get you a glass of water. Or better yet... why don't you head upstairs to my private office on the sixtieth floor? It's quiet up there, and I have some confidential acquisition files I need you to review tonight."
Andrew bristled immediately, his protective fiancé mask snapping back into place. "Actually, Mr. Carter, Ava and I were planning to head home shortly. We have an early morning at the hospital, and she needs her rest."
Ethan didn't look at Andrew. He kept his eyes locked on mine, waiting for my cue.
"I'd like to go up to your office, Mr. Carter," I said clearly, my voice steady for the first time all evening. "There are files that need reviewing."
Andrew’s jaw tightened. He shot me a venomous, sideways glare that promised absolute hell the moment we crossed the threshold of our apartment. "Ava, don't be ridiculous—"
"It's fine, Dr. Vaughn," Ethan interrupted, stepping smoothly between Andrew and me, effectively cutting off his physical proximity. "Carter Tower is my building. My staff will ensure Miss Chen gets home safely when we finish our work. Enjoy the rest of your celebration."
Without waiting for Andrew’s permission, Ethan offered me his arm.
I slipped my hand into the crook of his elbow, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of his muscle beneath the wool of his tuxedo jacket. As we walked away from the ballroom floor, leaving Andrew standing alone amidst a sea of chattering socialites, I looked back just once.
Andrew was staring after us with a look of pure, unadulterated panic.
Ten minutes later, the private elevator doors chimed, opening directly into Ethan’s sprawling, glass-walled executive suite on the sixtieth floor of Carter Tower. The city lights of Manhattan stretched out below us like a sea of glittering diamonds, completely silent from this dizzying height.
Ethan locked the elevator doors behind us, tossed his suit jacket over the back of his leather sofa, and immediately turned to face me.
"Are you out of your mind?" I burst out, pacing across the hardwood floor, my nerves finally fraying. "Taking me away from him like that in front of half the city? Do you have any idea what Andrew is going to do to me when we finally get home?"
"You are not going back to him, Ava," Ethan said, his voice flat, absolute, and terrifyingly calm.
I stopped pacing and stared at him. "What are you talking about? Of course I am. I live in his apartment. My clothes are there, my life is there—"
"Your life is right here," Ethan interrupted, walking toward his massive mahogany desk. He unlocked a heavy bottom drawer with a small brass key he pulled from his pocket, reached inside, and pulled out a thick, manila folder stamped with confidential red lettering.
He walked over and handed it to me.
"What is this?" I asked, my fingers trembling as I took the folder.
"Open it."
I flipped the cover open. Inside were printed medical reports, high-resolution photographs of emergency room admissions from three different hospitals across Manhattan over the past fourteen months, and detailed financial transfer records.
My breath caught in my throat.
"These are..." I whispered, flipping the pages in horror. "These are my medical records from my ER visits... and police incident logs?"
"Not just yours," Ethan said grimly. "Keep reading."
I turned the page. The next section contained background check profiles, sworn affidavits from former nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital, and financial settlement documents detailing exorbitant hush-money payouts signed by three different women over the past decade.
All of them former nurses or junior residents. All of them engaged to or dating Dr. Andrew Vaughn. All of them who had suffered 'accidental falls' down hospital stairs or in apartment stairwells before mysteriously resigning from their positions and disappearing from New York society.
"He's done this before," I whispered, the room spinning around me. "To other women."
"Yes," Ethan said, stepping closer, his gray eyes burning with righteous fury. "And for years, Andrew used his political donations, his medical prestige, and my father's old foundation board connections to bury every single one of those reports. He thought he was untouchable."
Ethan reached out and placed his hand gently over the folder in my hands.
"He's not untouchable anymore, Ava. Because two hours ago, while he was accepting his award downstairs, my legal team filed an emergency federal indictment against Dr. Andrew Vaughn for domestic abuse, assault, and workplace intimidation across multiple state jurisdictions."
I stared at Ethan, the world crashing down around me in a wave of overwhelming, terrifying liberation.
May you like
"Federal indictment?" I choked out, a sob finally breaking through my chest. "He... he's going to prison?"
"He's going away for a very long time," Ethan promised softly, his thumb wiping away a fresh tear rolling down my cheek. "And you never have to look at him, speak to him, or fear him ever again."
