Chapter 6 - Ashes and EmbersBy afternoon, the offices of Caldwell & Finch were quiet again, but the heavy shadow of scandal had lifted, replaced by the clean, sharp breeze of a fresh start. Victoria Finch had been escorted out of the building by federal authorities, her decades-long tyranny over the firm brought to an abrupt and disgraceful end.
The board had held an immediate emergency vote, unanimously appointing Ethan as the sole governing CEO, with Maya officially promoted to Managing Director of Operations.
As the sun began to set over Lake Michigan, painting the winter sky in bruised shades of purple and gold, Maya stood alone on the winter terrace of the 42nd floor. The glass walls reflected the twinkling lights of downtown Chicago.
The door clicked open.
Footsteps approached, steady and deliberate. Maya didn't need to turn around to know it was Ethan.
"They've sealed the asset freezes," Ethan said quietly, stopping just a few feet behind her. His voice was softer now, stripped of the armor he had worn for years. "The firm is safe. The charity funds will be fully restored by morning."
Maya turned slowly, leaning back against the iron trellis. She looked at him—no longer her boss hiding a dangerous secret, but a man finally free.
"You played a very dangerous game, Ethan Caldwell," Maya said softly, a small, teasing smile touching her lips. "Waiting ten years to take her down from the inside, risking everything."
"I didn't risk everything until you walked into that ballroom in that emerald dress," Ethan replied, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from him. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing against her lower lip. "I spent years surviving her corporate games. But the moment I saw you looking at me across that room, I knew I couldn't survive another day pretending I didn't love you."
