Chapter 2 - Whispers in the LedgerThe morning after the gala, the offices of Caldwell & Finch on the 42nd floor of a Michigan Avenue high-rise hummed with exhaustion. Maya sat at her glass desk, her laptop open, cross-referencing last quarter's vendor payouts. Her hair was pulled back into its usual severe bun, her grey blazer buttoned tightly. The emerald dress was locked away in her closet, feeling like a fever dream.

Yet, the fallout from the night before lingered. Ryan Cole had avoided her completely at the coffee bar, and Ethan had locked himself in his corner office since 7:00 AM.

Maya's phone buzzed. An internal Slack message from the finance department: “Maya, you need to see this discrepancy in the Q3 philanthropic trust accounts. Approval signatures don't match the board minutes.”

Frowning, Maya pulled up the restricted folder. Her administrative clearance gave her access, but what she saw made her blood run cold. Over four hundred thousand dollars had been siphoned from the charity gala funds into an offshore shell company named V&E Holdings.

V. and E.

Victoria and Ethan? No. Ethan didn't even sign off on those accounts; his signature had been forged. Or authorized under a blanket proxy that only one person possessed executive control over: Victoria Finch.

Before Maya could dig deeper, the door to her office swung open. Victoria Finch stood there, leaning heavily on her pearl-handled cane, her eyes sharp as shards of glass.

"Working hard, Maya?" Victoria asked smoothly, stepping into the room without an invitation.

"Always, Ms. Finch," Maya replied steadily, instantly minimizing the ledger window.

"Good. Because competence is what keeps people safe in this firm," Victoria said, stepping closer to Maya's desk. The older woman's gaze flicked down to the minimized screen before returning to Maya's face with a thin, icy smile. "Ethan cares for you, child. That is a dangerous distraction for a man in his position. Families like the Caldwells... and the Finches... they build legacies on absolute loyalty. Make sure your loyalties are pointing in the right direction before you find yourself out of a job."

As Victoria limped out of the office, Maya's hands trembled slightly. The warning was not subtle. It was a threat.
