Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThe next morning, the grand conference hall on the 40th floor was packed to capacity. The emergency board meeting had been called at dawn. The long mahogany table was surrounded by senior partners, legal representatives, and two federal agents from the SEC financial crimes division who had arrived unannounced at 8:00 AM.

Victoria sat at the head of the table, looking like an untouchable queen, her expression a mask of sorrowful betrayal.

"It pains me to bring this before the board," Victoria addressed the room, her voice trembling with practiced theatricality. "For decades, Caldwell & Finch has stood for absolute integrity. But when our chief operations officer, Ms. Bennett, was caught attempting to exfiltrate classified financial records last night—backed by unauthorized approvals—we had no choice but to involve federal authorities."

At the side of the room, Maya sat in a stiff leather chair, her hands folded tightly in her lap. She looked composed, though her heart raced.

Ethan stood at the opposite end of the table. He wasn't wearing his jacket; his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, his expression like granite. He hadn't looked at Victoria once since the meeting began.

"Are you finished, Victoria?" Ethan’s voice cut through the murmurs of the room like a razor.

Victoria blinked, a flicker of unease crossing her features. "Ethan, this is a difficult time for all of us, but the evidence—"

"The evidence is damning, yes," Ethan interrupted calmly. He turned to the two federal agents standing near the door. "Agent Miller, if you would please open the primary terminal link."

Agent Miller nodded, tapping a few keys on a secure tablet. Instantly, the large projection screen behind the board table flickered to life.

It wasn't Maya’s flash drive on the screen. It was a complete, unbroken audit trail of wire transfers dating back ten years—all routed through V&E Holdings, signed explicitly with Victoria Finch’s digital private encryption key, and cross-referenced with personal offshore accounts in Zurich. Furthermore, a recorded phone call began playing through the room’s surround-sound speakers—a conversation from three nights prior where Victoria openly discussed framing Maya for the embezzlement scheme.

The color drained entirely from Victoria’s face. She gripped her cane so hard her knuckles turned white.

"This... this is a fabrication! Deepfake audio!" Victoria shrieked, standing up abruptly.

"It's authenticated by federal subpoena, Ms. Finch," Agent Miller said coldly, stepping forward and placing a pair of steel handcuffs on the table. "You're under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and obstruction of justice."
