Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Night(Focus: Eleanor attempts a desperate counter-offensive, releasing false press about Lily’s mental health; Adam’s tactical response.)

On Thursday morning, the city's primary tabloid outlets exploded with a coordinated, malicious smear campaign.
The headlines were vicious:
[CARTER GLOBAL HEIR IN CRISIS: Is the Young Mrs. Carter Suffering a Severe Mental Breakdown?]
The articles featured leaked medical files—blatantly falsified by a clinic Eleanor owned—claiming that Lily had a history of self-harm, emotional instability, and that the injuries she sustained in our apartment were self-inflicted during a manic episode while I was away in New York. The implication was clear: Eleanor was positioning herself as the worried, protective grandmother trying to save her son from an unstable, gold-digging wife.
I walked into Lily’s hospital room to find her staring at her phone, her face pale, tears streaming down her cheeks as she read the cruel comments online.
"Adam..." she sobbed, holding her hand over her stomach. "They're calling me a liar. They're saying I hurt myself... that I wanted to hurt our baby. Everyone believes her. She has so much power... she owns the media outlets."
I walked over, took the phone from her hand, and turned it off. I sat on the edge of her bed, pulling her into a warm, tight embrace, letting her cry into my chest.
"Let them talk, Lily," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Because the higher she builds her tower of lies, the harder it’s going to fall."
"What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice trembling. "We can't fight her in public. She has millions to spend on PR firms."
"I don't need a PR firm, sweetheart," I said, pulling a digital recorder from my pocket. "I have the truth. And I have the one thing Eleanor fears more than poverty: public shame."
I called Daniel into the room. Behind him walked a young, independent investigative journalist named Sarah Lin. Sarah had spent years trying to expose the corruption within the city's elite philanthropic circles, but had always been silenced by my family's legal threats.
"Sarah has full access to our forensic audit, the medical reports from St. Jude’s, and the security footage from our apartment lobby showing Eleanor and her corrupt doctor entering the building with a black medical bag," I explained to Lily. "We aren't going to file a quiet lawsuit, Lily. We are going to broadcast the entire truth to the world."
"But Adam," Lily whispered, her eyes wide. "If we do this, the Carter name... your family's legacy... it will be destroyed."
I looked down at the bandaged hand of my brave, beautiful wife, then at the gentle curve of her belly where our son was sleeping, safe and warm.

"My family's legacy isn't a corporate logo, Lily," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "My legacy is sitting in this room. My family is you."
With Lily’s permission, Sarah Lin began her recording, and for the next three hours, my wife told her story—the story of a young, pregnant woman who had survived a terrifying, violent assault in her own home by the hands of a powerful matriarch who valued gold over human life.
