Chapter 2 - The Emergency Injunction(Focus: The high-stakes emergency room scene, the realization of Eleanor's powerful reach, and Adam’s legal battle to protect his wife and child from his family's influence.)

The emergency room of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was loud, bright, and smelled of antiseptic and ozone. I sat in a plastic chair in the corner of the private trauma bay, my hands covered in Lily’s blood, my mind spinning in a dark vortex of fury and regret.

Every sixty seconds, I looked at the digital monitor monitoring our baby’s heartbeat.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

It was fast, slightly erratic, but it was there. The emergency OB-GYN, Dr. Melissa Vance, had been working on Lily for the last hour, cleaning the deep lacerations on her hands and administering localized medication to stop the uterine contractions caused by the physical trauma and stress.

"She’s stabilized, Mr. Carter," Dr. Vance said, pulling off her surgical gloves with a sharp snap. Her expression was incredibly grave. "The cut on her hand required twelve stitches, and we’ve administered a safe localized block to stop the early labor. But I have to ask you... these bruises on her wrists. They are consistent with physical restraint. And the toxicology report we ran shows trace amounts of a powerful sedative in her system. If you had arrived thirty minutes later, the fetal distress would have been irreversible."

"I know who did it," I said, my voice barely a whisper, but vibrating with a terrifying, quiet rage. "My mother. Eleanor Carter."

Dr. Vance’s eyes widened slightly. The Carter family was one of the largest philanthropic donors to St. Jude’s. The name was printed in gold letters on the wing of the very building we were standing in.

"Adam," Dr. Vance said softly, stepping closer and lowering her voice. "If this is a domestic situation involving Eleanor, you need to understand that the hospital administration... they are very close to her. If she catches wind that Lily is here, she has the legal authority through your family’s medical guardianship clause to access these files."

"Not anymore she doesn't," a sharp, professional voice answered from the doorway.

I looked up to see Daniel Vance, my closest friend and a ruthless corporate litigation attorney, walking into the room. He was dressed in a dark grey suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase and a tablet that was actively displaying court filing receipts.

"Daniel," I said, standing up, my knees shaking. "Did you get it?"

"It’s done, Adam," Daniel said, handing me a copy of a certified, judge-signed document. "I woke up Judge Harrison. Given the physical evidence of the bruises, the medical kit you retrieved from the apartment, and the toxicology report Dr. Vance just generated, we have been granted an [EMERGENCY TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER AND MEDICAL INJUNCTION] against Eleanor Carter and any of her designated representatives."

"What does that mean legally?" I asked.

"It means that if your mother, her lawyers, or any doctor she employs comes within five hundred yards of Lily or this hospital, they will be immediately arrested by the federal marshals currently stationed at the entrance," Daniel explained, his eyes filled with a fierce, protective determination. "Furthermore, I’ve filed an emergency petition to strip Eleanor of any proxy medical authority over you or your dependents. She cannot touch Lily, and she cannot touch your unborn son."

I looked through the glass window of the trauma bay. Lily was asleep, her breathing steady, her bandaged hand resting over her stomach.

"She tried to kill my child, Daniel," I whispered, my fists clenching so hard my fingernails bit into my palms. "She sat at my dinner table, smiled at me, and planned the murder of my son because she thinks our family bloodline is a royal dynasty that shouldn't be soiled by a girl from a working-class family."

"She’s played this game for decades, Adam," Daniel said, placing a steady hand on my shoulder. "But she made one fatal mistake this time."

"What’s that?"

"She forgot that you are a Carter, too. And you have the same fire in your veins."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed in my pocket. The caller ID displayed a private, encrypted number. I knew that number. It was the private line to the Carter Estate in Lake Forest.

I slid the bar to answer, pressing the phone to my ear. I didn't say a word.

"Adam, darling," my mother’s voice came through the speaker, smooth, elegant, and entirely devoid of any guilt, as if she were simply calling to discuss a charity luncheon. "I hear you returned from New York a bit earlier than expected. I hope you aren't letting that dramatic girl make a scene. Come home to the estate. Let the family handle this quietly."

"Eleanor," I said, using her first name for the first time in my life, my voice sounding like grinding stones. "If I ever see your face near my wife again, I won't just lock you out of my life. I will dismantle the Carter empire piece by piece until you have nothing left but the ashes of your pride."

May you like

There was a long, chilling pause on the other end of the line.

"You always did have your father’s dramatic flair, Adam," she whispered softly before the call disconnected, leaving only the cold, mechanical hum of the dial tone.
