Chapter 6 - The ReconstructionSix months later.

The high-stakes world of Chicago real estate had undergone a seismic shift, but not the way Victoria Harrison had anticipated.

After resigning from Harrison Global, Nathan hadn't retired. Instead, he founded a new non-profit development firm called Parker & Harrison Community Trust. Using his remaining personal fortune, he began constructing affordable, eco-friendly housing complexes, community science labs, and free daycare centers across the working-class neighborhoods of Chicago.

He moved into a beautiful, sunlit three-bedroom townhouse just three blocks from Emma’s school.

Every morning at 7:30 a.m., Nathan could be seen walking down the sidewalk, holding Ethan’s hand in his left hand and Noah’s in his right, carrying their rocket-patterned backpacks as he walked them to kindergarten.

Every evening, he cooked dinner for Emma and the boys in his open-concept kitchen, listening to Emma talk about her middle-school science students while the boys drew pictures of space stations at the dining table.

Slowly, carefully, brick by brick, Nathan and Emma rebuilt their love.

It wasn't the frantic, passion-blind romance of their youth. It was something mature, deep, and unbreakable—built on honesty, shared hardship, and absolute devotion to their children.

On a warm May evening, after the twins had fallen asleep after a long day at the lake, Nathan and Emma sat on the outdoor porch of the townhouse, watching the city lights twinkle in the distance.

Emma leaned her head against Nathan’s shoulder, holding a warm glass of wine.

"Your mother called my school office today," Emma mentioned softly.

Nathan froze slightly, his hand pausing as he stroked Emma's arm. "What did she say?"

"She asked if she could send birthday gifts for the boys' fifth birthday next month," Emma revealed. "She sounded... old, Nathan. Broken."

Nathan sighed, looking out at the skyline. "What did you tell her?"

"I told her that gifts mean nothing," Emma answered softly, turning to look into Nathan’s eyes. "I told her that if she wants to be a grandmother to Ethan and Noah, she has to come to our house, sit at our table, apologize to my sons, and prove that she can be a human being."

Nathan smiled softly, leaning down to press a deep, loving kiss onto Emma’s forehead. "You are stronger than I ever was, Emma."

"We are strong together, Nathan," Emma whispered, reaching up to touch his face. "We always were. You just had to come back to us."
