Chapter 5 - The First StepThe afternoon sun shone brightly over Lincoln Park.

The autumn air was crisp, blowing golden leaves across the green grass near the children's play area.
Emma sat on a wooden park bench, wearing a warm scarf, holding two paper cups of hot cocoa. She watched her two boys laughing hysterically as they climbed up the red jungle gym.
A shadow fell over the bench.
She looked up. Nathan stood there, wearing a warm brown jacket, carrying a small cardboard box from the North Side bakery.
"May I sit?" Nathan asked softly.
Emma hesitated for a second, then nodded, sliding over to make room. "How did it go at the tower?"
"I resigned," Nathan said simply, sitting down beside her. "I gave my shares to the employee fund. My mother is no longer in control of my life."
Emma turned her head to look at him, searching his face for any regret, any sorrow for losing his multi-billion-dollar kingdom. She found none. His eyes were clearer, brighter, and more alive than she had ever seen them.
"You really did it," Emma whispered in disbelief.
"I told you," Nathan smiled gently. "My empire was dust. This is what matters."
He opened the cardboard box, revealing three fresh, warm cinnamon rolls.
"I brought peace offerings," Nathan said.
Emma let out a soft, genuine laugh—a sound Nathan had missed for five long years. It washed over his heart like warm rain.
"Ethan!" Emma called out toward the playground. "Noah! Come here for a second!"
The two little boys stopped playing and ran over, their small boots thudding against the wood chips. They slid to a halt in front of the bench, their cheeks red from the cold air.
Ethan’s eyes widened as he spotted the bakery box. "Cinnamon rolls?!"
"Yes," Nathan said softly, handing a napkin to each boy. "The owner made them fresh ten minutes ago."
Noah took his roll, then looked up at Nathan with wide, curious eyes. "Mister... why do you look like me and Ethan?"
The question hit Nathan right in the throat. He looked up at Emma, seeking her permission.
Emma looked at her sons, then reached out and gently laid her hand over Nathan’s hand on the bench. It was the first time she had touched him in five years. Her hand was warm and forgiving.
"Boys," Emma said softly, her voice trembling with sweet emotion. "Do you remember how I told you that your father was a man who built giant buildings far away, but that he loved you very much?"
Ethan and Noah nodded in unison, their mouths full of pastry.
"Well," Emma smiled, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "He finished building his last tower. And he came home to be your dad."
Ethan blinked, looking at Nathan. "Are you our daddy?"
Nathan dropped to his knees in the grass, his eyes brimming with tears as he reached out his arms. "I am, sweetie. I am your daddy. And I am never, ever leaving you again."
May you like
Noah didn't hesitate. He dropped his cinnamon roll onto the napkin and threw his small arms around Nathan’s neck. A second later, Ethan jumped into the hug too, wrapping his little arms around Nathan’s shoulders.
Nathan buried his face in his sons' small shoulders, weeping openly in the park, holding his entire world in his arms.
