Chapter 5 - In the Eye of the Storm“That’s impossible,” I whispered, stumbling back until the edge of the bed caught the back of my knees. I sank down onto the mattress, my hands trembling violently. “My father didn't steal anything. He was an accountant, a broken man who lost everything to his gambling addiction!”

“Your father was a cleaner for Petrov for over a decade,” Antonio corrected, his voice devoid of pity, filled only with hard, unvarnished reality. He tossed the phone onto the bed beside me. “When Petrov found out your father was skimming millions to pay off his debts, he executed him. But your father was smart—he hid the digital ledger inside a secure encrypted file, and he left the decryption key with the only person he trusted.”

He stopped right in front of me, dropping to one knee so we were at eye level. His large hands gently enclosed my ice-cold fingers, anchoring me to the earth.

“You,” he said softly. “Petrov doesn't care that our marriage was on paper. In his eyes, you are my legal wife, my soft underbelly, and the ultimate leverage to bring me down. Bringing you here wasn't a honeymoon to play house, Sophia. It was the only way to keep you alive while I hunt Petrov down.”

The room felt entirely devoid of oxygen. Every angry word I had screamed at him just moments ago dissolved into a suffocating ash of guilt and terror. All this time, while I was cursing him for trapping me in a golden cage, he had been building a fortress to protect me from a firing squad.

“Why didn't you tell me?” I choked out, a tear finally escaping down my cheek. “Why let me think you were just... just a ruthless tyrant?”

“Because if you knew the truth, your fear would have shown on your face in Manhattan,” Antonio said, his thumb gently wiping away the tear from my cheek with surprising tenderness. “And my enemies read fear like wolves smell blood. I needed you to look at me with genuine anger and defiance so no one would ever suspect how deep my protection actually goes.”

I stared down at him, the terrifying, brutal mafia boss who had quietly positioned himself as a shield between me and a bullet. The armor I had spent three weeks building around my heart cracked wide open, letting a blinding, terrifying warmth rush in.

“What happens now?” I whispered, my voice breaking.

Antonio stood up, his gaze hardening into absolute lethal focus as he looked toward the glass doors facing the open ocean. “Now, Petrov’s men have picked up our satellite ping. They know we’re on this island.”

Before I could even process the warning, a sharp, piercing alarm shrieked through the villa. Red emergency lights began to pulse along the baseboards of the master suite.

Antonio grabbed a heavy tactical holster from the walk-in closet, strapping it swiftly across his broad chest, the weight of a customized Sig Sauer pistol gleaming coldly in the dim red light. He turned back to me, his eyes burning with an intensity that burned away all fear.

“Stay in this room, lock the reinforced steel shutters, and do not open the door for anyone except me,” he ordered, his voice commanding and absolute.

“Antonio, no—” I started, leaping to my feet, but he already had his hand on the door handle.

“Trust me, Sophia,” he said, looking back over his shoulder with a fierce, possessive devotion that stole my breath. “I built this island to be a fortress. Nobody touches what is mine.”

With that, he slipped out into the hallway, the heavy steel door sliding shut and locking automatically behind him with a definitive, chilling click.
