Chapter 3 - Echoes in the DarkThe master suite felt suffocating by midnight.

After dinner, Antonio had retreated to his private study on the lower level of the villa to deal with encrypted satellite calls, leaving me alone behind locked doors. Or rather, doors I thought were locked. I had spent hours pacing the plush rug, staring out at the moonlight dancing across the black waves, turning over every possible escape route in my head. There were no boats except the Veloce, anchored fifty yards offshore, and the island was surrounded by jagged reefs and unpredictable currents. We were entirely cut off.
Restless and unable to sleep, I crept out of the king-sized bed and padded barefoot across the hardwood floor toward the adjoining set of double doors—the ones Antonio had pointed out on our first day aboard the yacht, marking the boundary to his personal quarters.
Curiosity killed the cat, a voice in my head warned. But caution had never saved my father, and it certainly hadn't saved me.
I pushed the heavy mahogany door softly. It swung open without a single squeak, revealing a vast, dimly lit study lined with towering bookshelves, leather armchairs, and a massive mahogany desk covered in tactical maps and security feeds of the island. But what caught my breath in my throat wasn't the room itself—it was Antonio.
He wasn't wearing his shirt. He stood with his back to me near a recessed wet bar, pouring a glass of whiskey. Under the amber glow of the desk lamp, the extensive network of scars across his back, shoulders, and ribs was stark and brutal. They were map lines of violence, a silent testament to the bloody turf wars that had crowned him the undisputed king of New York's underworld.
I froze, my hand still resting against the doorframe.
Without turning around, Antonio spoke into the quiet room. “I thought I locked that door.”
“You underestimate my stubbornness,” I replied, my voice sounding steadier than I felt.
Antonio turned slowly, the glass of whiskey in his hand. His dark eyes swept over my silk nightgown, a flicker of raw, undisguised hunger crossing his face before he masked it behind his usual stoic facade. He didn't look embarrassed or defensive; he looked like a predator who had just watched his prey walk straight into his den.
“Stalking me in the dark, Sophia?” he asked, taking a slow step toward me. “Or are you finally ready to admit that the distance between our rooms is entirely artificial?”
“I was looking for a way off this rock,” I lied, holding my ground even as my heart hammered violently against my ribs.
Antonio stopped just inches away from me. The scent of cedar, clean skin, and raw power washed over me, making my head spin. He reached up, his long fingers gently tracing the line of my jaw, tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look into his eyes.
“There is no off, Sophia. Not anymore,” he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across my lower lip. “You’ve spent three weeks convincing yourself that I don't care, that you were just a signature on a piece of paper to keep up appearances. Look at me and tell me you still believe that lie.”
I opened my mouth to speak, to throw his cold wedding night words right back in his face, but the intense heat radiating from his touch stole all the oxygen from my lungs. His thumb pressed harder against my lip, parting them slightly.
“You hate the control I hold over your life,” he whispered, his voice rough and hypnotic. “And yet, you’re standing in my private sanctuary at two in the morning, looking at me with fire in your eyes instead of fear.”
“I do fear you, Antonio,” I breathed out, though even to my own ears, it sounded like a plea rather than a warning.
May you like
“No,” he corrected softly, his other hand coming up to rest securely against the small of my back, pulling me flush against his hard, scarred chest. “You fear what you’re starting to feel for me.”
Before I could process the gravity of his words, his lips crashed down onto mine. It wasn't a gentle kiss; it was a hungry, possessive claim born of weeks of forced restraint. Every defense I had built over the last three weeks crumbled instantly beneath the overwhelming tide of his touch. My hands, which had meant to push him away, somehow wound their way up around his neck, tangling in his dark hair as the world outside the villa faded into absolute nothingness.
