Chapter 3 - The Audit of a ParasiteThe heavy oak doors of the private elevator opened again, and Henderson walked in carrying a thick, leather-bound binder stamped with the crimson seal of Vance Global Forensic Accounting & Legal.

He didn't hand the binder to Elias. Instead, he walked right past Marcus and placed it squarely on the glass coffee table in front of me, flipping it open to the first tab.
Marcus turned around, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. “What is this garbage? You think you can intimidate me with fake paperwork?”
“It’s not fake, Mr. Sterling,” Henderson said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. “It’s a comprehensive financial audit of your real estate development firm, Sterling Holdings, covering the past thirty-six months.”
Marcus scoffed, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. “My business is clean! I have accountants—”
“Your accountants resigned last month when they realized you were using client escrow accounts to cover your private gambling debts in Atlantic City,” Elias interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. He stepped closer to Marcus, leaning down slightly to look him dead in the eye. “Did you really think that when you decided to track me down, my intelligence team wouldn't spend the intervening twenty minutes pulling every public and private record associated with your name?”
Marcus’s jaw dropped. “You... you investigated me?”
“When someone tries to extort me,” Elias said calmly, “I don't negotiate. I dissect.”
Henderson pointed a gloved finger at the financial ledger on the table.
“Page fourteen details three million dollars in unauthorized wire transfers from municipal housing grants directly into your personal Cayman Islands shell corporation,” Henderson recited smoothly. “Page twenty-two outlines systemic tax evasion on twenty-eight commercial properties across Queens. And page thirty... well, page thirty is particularly interesting, sir.”
Marcus lunged forward as if to snatch the binder off the table, but Henderson stepped smoothly to the side, letting Marcus grab nothing but empty air.
“What is on page thirty?” Marcus screamed, his face turning a mottled, furious purple.
“That,” Elias said smoothly, “is the signed confession from your former business partner, David Chen, who was arrested by federal agents twenty minutes ago at JFK Airport trying to board a flight to Zurich.”
The blood drained entirely from Marcus’s face. He staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of the velvet sofa, nearly losing his balance.
“David... arrested?” Marcus whispered, his voice pitching up into a hysterical squeak. “No... that’s impossible. He’s my partner!”
“He was your partner,” Elias corrected coldly. “Until federal prosecutors offered him full immunity in exchange for handing over every single document proving that you—and only you—orchestrated the fraudulent loan applications that funded your lifestyle.”
Elias walked over to the bar cart, poured himself a finger of amber whiskey, and took a slow sip before looking back at Marcus with utter indifference.
“The federal indictment was filed electronically three minutes ago,” Elias continued. “By dawn, the Department of Justice will freeze every corporate and personal bank account in your name. Your assets will be seized, your commercial licenses revoked, and your freedom forfeited for the next fifteen to twenty years.”
Marcus stood frozen in the center of the luxurious penthouse, his mouth hanging open, his eyes wide with a terror so profound it looked physical. The golden boy of New York real estate—the abusive husband who had thrown his wife and newborn babies into the snow because they weren't sons—was suddenly staring into the yawning abyss of total, irreversible ruin.
“No,” Marcus whimpered, shaking his head frantically as reality crashed down upon him. “No, you can’t do that! You’re a billionaire—you can make this go away! We can make a deal! Ava! Ava, tell him! I’m your husband! We have history!”
I looked up from the sofa, cradling my sleeping daughters against my heart. The fear that had gripped my chest for years—the crushing, suffocating terror of his voice, his heavy footsteps, his fists—was completely, miraculously gone.
There was nothing left inside me for him. Not even hatred. Just a profound, liberating pity.
“My name is Ava Miller,” I said softly, my voice steady and clear in the quiet room. “And I haven't had a husband since the night you left us under that overpass.”
Marcus’s face twisted in desperate rage. He lunged toward the sofa, his hands clawing out in my direction as if he wanted to tear me apart with his bare hands.
“You bitch!” he screamed. “You ruined everything! You ruined—”
He never finished the sentence.
Before his fingers could even come within a foot of my coat, both of Elias’s security guards moved with the speed of striking cobras. Strong hands grabbed Marcus by the shoulders and arms, yanking him backward with brutal efficiency, slamming him face-first onto the marble floor.

“Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!” Marcus shrieked, muffled against the floor tiles as a knee pressed firmly into the small of his back.
“We know exactly who you are, Mr. Sterling,” Henderson said coldly, clicking a pair of stainless-steel zip-ties around Marcus’s wrists with a sharp zip. “And the federal marshals downstairs are very eager to meet you.”
