Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the PastOne year after the wedding that shook New York, Avery returned to Manhattan for a brief, high-level corporate summit.

On a crisp Tuesday evening, she attended a private charity gala hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in support of urban architectural preservation. The grand hall was filled with global elites, ambassadors, and cultural titans who treated Avery with the utmost deference and admiration.
She wore a breathtaking, backless emerald-silk gown that radiated timeless elegance, her antique diamond drop earrings catching the museum's warm chandelier light.
As she stood near the grand staircase speaking with the director of the Metropolitan Museum, a commotion near the entrance caught her attention.
A man in a cheap, ill-fitting rental suit was arguing quietly with the security guards. He looked gaunt, his shoulders slumped, his hair prematurely graying around the temples, the once-confident swagger of a Wall Street titan completely beaten out of him.
Grant Caldwell.
He must have managed to secure a brief day-release or probationary furlough, or perhaps he had wandered in hoping to catch a glimpse of the world he had lost. When his eyes scanned the opulent hall, they landed directly on Avery.
He froze.
For a second, the bustling museum seemed to fade away. Grant saw a woman who looked like royalty—radiant, powerful, untouchable, surrounded by people who hung on her every word.
He slowly began to walk toward her, his steps hesitant, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and deep, agonizing regret.
Security moved to block him, but Avery raised a hand, signaling them to let him pass.
Grant stopped a few feet away from her, his hands trembling slightly as he clasped them together. "Avery..." he whispered, his voice hoarse and broken.
Avery turned her head slightly, looking at him with neutral, calm eyes. There was no anger left in her heart—only the quiet distance one feels toward a forgotten memory.
"Grant," she acknowledged simply.
He swallowed hard, tears welling in his red-rimmed eyes. "I... I lost everything. The tower, the firm, my freedom... my entire life. I was a fool. I threw away the only person who ever truly cared about me for a lie."
Avery looked at him, her expression unchanging. "You didn't lose everything because of a lie, Grant. You lost everything because of who you are. You believed power was something you could steal, and love was something you could trade."
Grant lowered his gaze, staring at the polished marble floor in absolute defeat. "Is there... is there any way back? Can we ever..."
May you like
"No, Grant," Avery interrupted, her voice warm, steady, and absolute in its finality. "Some bridges aren't meant to be rebuilt. Some chapters are meant to be closed forever."
Before he could speak another word, Avery turned her back on him, walked up the grand staircase toward the ballroom, and disappeared into the brilliant light of her own empire.
