Chapter 1 - The Descent from the Crystal MeridianThe service elevator at the back of freight exit B3 was old, smelling faintly of industrial cleanser and damp concrete, but it moved quickly.

When the elevator shuddered to a halt, the heavy metal doors slid open.
Waiting outside in the dim shadows of the loading dock was a matte-black bulletproof Maybach. The rear door swung open instantly, and a tall man with iron-gray hair, sharp silver eyes, and an impeccably tailored charcoal suit stepped out.
Nathaniel Whitlock didn't speak. He simply opened his arms, and Avery walked into them. For a brief second, the iron-willed heiress allowed herself to lean against her father, feeling the steady warmth of a man who owned entire cities and yet would have burned them to the ground for her happiness.
"Are you hurt, pet?" Nathaniel asked softly, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that carried decades of absolute authority.
"Not physically, Father," Avery said, stepping back and smoothing the collar of her silk tank top. She looked up at him with eyes that burned like polished obsidian. "They thought they were humiliating a penniless orphan. Grant Caldwell actually believed he could discard me in front of six hundred socialites for a junior marketing clerk."
Nathaniel’s mouth curved into a terrifying, humorless smile. "Grant Caldwell. A clever little real estate parasite who has been trying to secure a sub-contract with our logistics division for eighteen months. He thinks his boutique firm is a titan. He doesn't realize his company is currently breathing entirely because our subsidiary banks extended his credit lines."
"Not anymore," Avery murmured, sliding into the back seat of the Maybach. "Begin phase one."

Nathaniel climbed in beside her, tapping his obsidian tablet. A soft chime echoed in the luxury cabin as a secure encrypted line connected. "Execute protocol Ironclad. Freeze all revolving credit lines to Caldwell Real Estate. Halt the pending municipal rail contracts in the tri-state area where they are listed as secondary partners. And notify the board of the Crystal Meridian Hotel that their primary corporate sponsor is transferring ownership effective midnight."
As the Maybach glided silently out into the rainy New York night, Avery looked out the tinted window toward the glittering skyline. Grant Caldwell was still inside his million-dollar wedding ballroom, celebrating a stolen bride and a fake victory. He had no idea that the foundation beneath his feet was already turning to dust.
