Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the SuiteBy 10:30 PM, the storm over downtown Chicago had intensified, driving heavy sheets of ice against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Drake Hotel Master Suite.

Inside the two-thousand-square-foot luxury suite, a quiet, weightless peace settled over my soul.
Emily sat on the plush velvet sofa, wearing her cozy pajamas, happily eating hot chocolate and chocolate-chip cookies provided by room service while watching an animated movie on the wide screen.
Sitting in the leather armchair across from me was my lead attorney and lifelong best friend, Madison Parker, who had flown in from New York two hours earlier.
Madison set down a thick leather folder bound by red legal seals onto the marble coffee table, sipping a glass of warm tea.
"The public relations damage to the Moretti Syndicate is absolute, Claire," Madison reported smoothly, her eyes gleaming with sharp, professional victory. "The story has been picked up by international news syndicates. Shares in Moretti Logistics dropped fourteen percent in Asian pre-market trading thirty minutes ago."
I took a slow sip of my chamomile tea, my mind calm, steady, and unbroken.
"What about my parents?" I asked flatly.
Madison offered a razor-sharp, bitter smile. "Your mother called my office eleven times in the last hour weeping. She claims she wants to 'reconnect' with her granddaughter now that Emily is the featured winner of the Moretti Foundation."
I let out a short, quiet laugh—a sound free from pain, bitterness, or lingering regret.
"Tell her my address is private," I instructed. "She chose Sophia seven years ago. She can stay with her choice."
KNOCK. KNOCK.
The heavy double mahogany doors of the master suite were knocked on three times—slow, measured, and desperate.
Madison stood up, nodding to two private security operators standing near the foyer.
The doors swung open.
Standing on the threshold, carrying no weapons and flanked by zero guards, was Vincent Moretti.
His dark tuxedo jacket was off, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair disheveled, his storm-gray eyes bloodshot, hollow, and filled with a profound, terrifying grief.
He didn't look at Madison or the security guards.

His gaze locked onto me.
"Claire," Vincent whispered rasply, stepping into the suite, his voice shaking with a raw, agonizing emotion. "Please... give me ten minutes."
