Chapter 2 - The Collapse of the GalaThe auditorium erupted into total, chaotic uproar.

Flashbulbs detonated across the front rows as dozens of investigative journalists and society photographers jumped out of their seats, their camera lenses zooming in on Vincent's bloodless face, Emily's gray eyes, and Sophia weeping hysterically in the front aisle.

"DON MORETTI! IS THIS TRUE?!" a reporter from the Chicago Tribune shouted over the noise. "DID YOU ABANDON YOUR LEGITIMATE DAUGHTER SEVEN YEARS AGO?!"

"SECURITY! CLEAR THE HALL!" Vincent bellowed in a dark, terrifying roar that rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead.

His chief lieutenant, Marco, along with twenty broad-shouldered Moretti security operators in dark suits, swept across the auditorium, forcibly escorting the media and guests out through the double mahogany exit doors.

Within five minutes, the massive four-hundred-seat auditorium was completely cleared of public attendees, leaving only the primary players under the harsh, white stage lights.

Sophia rushed up the side carpeted stairs onto the stage, her silver designer dress rustling violently, her eyes wide with unhinged, desperate rage.

"YOU BITCH!" Sophia shrieked, pointing her manicured finger at my face. "YOU PLANNED THIS! YOU BROUGHT THIS BASTARD CHILD HERE TO RUIN MY SON'S INHERITANCE!"

Before Sophia’s fingers could come near me, I stepped forward.

I didn't yell. I delivered a single, razor-sharp backhand slap across Sophia’s face.

THWACK!

The sharp crack echoed off the wooden stage walls like a gunshot.

Sophia stumbled backward three paces, clutching her reddening cheek, gasping in total, speech-bound shock.

"Keep your mouth shut, Sophia," I stated flatly, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "You took my husband, you took my parents' fake affection, but if you speak another word in front of my daughter... I will ruin what little dignity you have left."

Vincent didn't defend Sophia. He didn't even look at her.

He dropped flat onto his knees right on the wooden stage floorboards before seven-year-old Emily, his hands trembling violently as he reached out toward her small white dress.

"Emily..." Vincent wept, his storm-gray eyes overflowing with heavy, unadulterated tears that cut clean tracks through his stubble. "My little girl... my God... you have my eyes..."

Emily took one slow step backward, hiding behind my silk skirt, looking down at the six-foot-two mob boss groveling at her feet with a cool, intelligent indifference.

"Mommy," Emily asked softly, her clear seven-year-old voice echoing through the quiet stage, "is this the man who forgot us?"

Vincent squeezed his eyes shut, a raw, agonizing sob breaking from his chest that shook his entire broad frame.
