Chapter 6 - The Confession of the Fallen KingBack at the downtown hotel, the gala had degenerated into a full-scale riot of finger-pointing, corporate panic, and flashing police lights.

Two local detectives from the financial crimes division walked into the VIP lounge where Julian Cross was still sitting slumped against the velvet pillar, trembling uncontrollably, surrounded by broken glass and spilled champagne.
“Julian Cross?” the lead detective asked, flashing a silver badge.
Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his expensive gray suit stained with champagne and dirt. “I... I want my lawyer. This is a misunderstanding. I’m a corporate executive—!”
“You’re an executive under federal investigation for eight hundred thousand dollars in wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit corporate identity theft,” the detective stated coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “Stand up, Mr. Cross.”
As they hauled him to his feet, wrists clicking into the cold metal cuffs, Julian caught sight of Chloe Miller standing near the exit, weeping hysterically as hotel security guards demanded she surrender her designer handbag and jewelry as collateral for unpaid room tabs.
“Chloe!” Julian cried out, desperate for an anchor in the wreckage. “Call my mother! Call someone!”
Chloe turned her head away, her face twisted in pure disgust. “Don't talk to me, you loser! You promised me a penthouse, you promised me wealth! You’re a fraud!”
She wrenched her arm away from a security guard and bolted out the double doors into the night, abandoning Julian completely, exactly the way she had latched onto him—driven solely by greed.
The detectives pushed Julian down the central aisle of the ballroom, past the cold, averted gazes of the very investors who had praised him an hour earlier. As they led him out toward the service elevators, the reality of his total, absolute ruin finally set in.

He hadn't just lost a wife. He had lost his mind, his ambition, and his soul, trading a genuine, enduring love for a hollow reflection of success that shattered the moment it faced the truth.
As the elevator doors closed around him, plunging him into darkness, Julian buried his face in his hands and wept—not because he was sorry for what he had done to me, but because he finally realized there was no one left to save him.
