Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesGasps echoed from every corner of the room. Whispers of absolute disbelief bounced off the crystal chandeliers.

“Vance? Clarissa Vance?!”

“She’s Arthur Vance’s daughter? The billionaire heiress?!”

“And Julian Cross treated her like a maid? Is he out of his mind?!”

Chloe Miller dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered against the marble floor, splashing sparkling liquid across her designer shoes, but she didn't even notice. Her face had turned chalk-white, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes darted frantically between Arthur Vance and Julian.

Julian looked like he had been struck by lightning. His jaw hung slack, his knees trembling beneath his custom gray trousers. “No... no, that’s impossible,” he stammered, his voice cracking into a desperate squeak. “Clarissa... she’s quiet, she drives an old car, she doesn't have any money, she wears worn-out dresses—!”

“She wore a worn-out dress because she loved you,” my father roared, his fury filling the entire ballroom. “Because she believed in the pathetic lie that a humble heart could cure an ambitious coward! She gave you three years of her life, and you repaid her with cruelty, infidelity, and public humiliation!”

Before Julian could scramble for another excuse, Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a thick sheaf of legal documents.

“Julian Cross,” Marcus announced, his voice ringing with crisp, merciless professional authority. “As of 9:42 PM tonight, acting on behalf of Vance Global Holdings and primary equity holders, all revolving credit facilities, subsidiary capital injections, and emergency liquidity loans extended to Apex Logistics have been formally recalled in full.”

Julian stared at Marcus in sheer horror. “Recalled? You can’t do that! Those are ten-year notes! We have contracts—!”

“Contracts contingent upon financial solvency and compliance with moral ethics clauses,” Marcus interrupted smoothly, flipping a page. “Furthermore, our forensic auditors have uncovered systematic misappropriation of corporate funds—specifically, sixty-four unauthorized wire transfers totaling over eight hundred thousand dollars routed from Apex accounts to luxury personal assets, including a downtown penthouse leased under the name of Chloe Miller.”

Chloe gasped, staggering backward into a table of hors d'oeuvres, sending a tiered silver platter crashing down. “That’s a lie! Julian told me that money was from his corporate bonuses!”

“It was embezzled company capital,” Marcus stated flatly, looking directly at the shivering crowd of investors. “Which means every single investor in Apex Logistics is currently holding worthless stock in a shell corporation facing imminent federal bankruptcy and criminal investigation for corporate fraud.”

Panic instantly consumed the room.

Apex Group’s primary board members—the very men who had been toasting Julian just minutes earlier—swarmed around him with murderous expressions.

“You embezzled funds?!” shouted the senior managing director, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his gray suit and shaking him violently. “You used our venture capital to fund your mistress?! You’ve ruined us!”

“Get security! Call the SEC!” another investor screamed.

Julian stood paralyzed in the center of the mob, completely abandoned by the high-society elites who had been kissing his feet a moment before. His career, his reputation, his stolen wealth, and his glittering future had vanished into thin air in less than five minutes.

And then, through the parting crowd of panicked investors and shell-shocked executives, the double doors swung open once more.

I walked into the ballroom.

I was no longer wearing the frayed navy-blue dress. I wore a stunning, emerald-green silk evening gown custom-tailored by Versace, draped over my shoulders with effortless elegance. Around my neck rested a vintage diamond-and-emerald necklace—a family heirloom belonging to my mother, worth more than half the real estate holdings in downtown Cleveland.

The murmurs in the room died down instantly as the crowd parted to let me through. Every eye was locked on me.

Julian slowly turned his head, his bloodshot eyes widening in sheer terror as he looked at the woman he had dismissed as a useless, mousy housewife just a few hours ago.

“C-Clarissa...” he whispered, his voice trembling like a leaf in a hurricane. He took a staggering step toward me, falling heavily to his knees right on the polished marble floor. “Clarissa, please... I was a fool. I was blind! I love you! Please, tell your father to call off the lawyers, tell him to save the company... we’re husband and wife, we can fix this!”

I stopped a few feet away from him, looking down at the man who had broken my heart, expecting to feel triumph, or anger, or sweet revenge.

Instead, I felt only a profound, hollow emptiness—and the liberating peace of absolute closure.

“You told me I’d only embarrass you, Julian,” I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “You were right. But the only one being embarrassed right now is you.”

I turned my back on him, walking gracefully over to my father and Marcus.

“Let’s go home, Dad,” I said.

Arthur Vance smiled, wrapping a warm, protective arm around my shoulders. “Let’s go, my love. Your real life is waiting.”
