Chapter 5 - The Midnight Audit and the FreezeThe descent from the Apex ballroom felt like walking out of a bad dream into the crisp, clean air of reality.

As we stepped out of the grand hotel entrance, flashing camera strobes illuminated the night. Local financial journalists, paparazzi, and news vans had already converged on the scene, tipped off by emergency police dispatch logs and frantic calls from panicked investors inside the gala.
Microphones were thrust toward us, and reporters shouted over one another.
“Mr. Vance! Is it true Apex Logistics is facing immediate liquidation?!”
“Mrs. Cross—is it true you are the sole heiress of Vance Global Holdings?!”
“Is this a hostile corporate takeover or a personal vendetta?!”
Marcus Vance stepped in front of us, shielding the cameras with a calm, professional wave. “No comment at this time. All official statements regarding the insolvency and forensic audit of Apex Logistics will be released through our legal PR office at 8:00 AM tomorrow.”
We climbed into the back of the waiting armored Maybach, and the heavy doors sealed out the chaos of the street.
Inside the quiet, climate-controlled cabin, my father poured two glasses of sparkling water from the built-in mini-bar, handing one to me. His hands were steady, his eyes bright with a mixture of lingering fury and deep pride.
“You handled yourself like a true Vance tonight, Clarissa,” my father said, clinking his glass gently against mine. “I was worried the isolation of that house had softened you.”
“It didn't soften me, Dad,” I replied, taking a refreshing sip. “It just taught me how to wait.”
Marcus opened his laptop on his knees, tapping rapidly against the illuminated keyboard. The screen cast a cool blue glow across the interior of the car. “Well, the timing couldn't have been more exquisite. By the time Julian wakes up in a holding cell tomorrow morning, the federal receivership will have already seized every physical asset tied to Apex Logistics, including his personal bank accounts, his luxury vehicles, and that Shaker Heights mansion.”
“What about Chloe Miller?” I asked, looking out the window as the city lights blurred past.
“Her apartment lease was co-signed by Julian using embezzled funds,” Marcus smirked without looking up from his screen. “The landlord has already served her an eviction notice. By midnight, she’ll be packing her designer bags into a taxi with nowhere to go and no one to pay her bills. The high-society friends she and Julian spent months cultivating have already blocked her number on every social platform.”
I felt a quiet, distant pang of pity—not for her, but for the sheer fragility of a life built entirely on deceit and superficial greed. They had chased luxury at the expense of human decency, and the moment the money vanished, the illusion dissolved into ash.
When we arrived back at my father’s sprawling estate on the outskirts of the city—a place I hadn't stepped foot in since my wedding day—the grand iron gates swung open automatically. The sprawling brick manor looked exactly as it had three years ago, a fortress of permanence and security.

As I walked through the grand double doors into the familiar foyer, the heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders for thirty-six months finally lifted completely.
I was home.
