Chapter 3 - The Toast on the Apex FloorHigh above the sparkling streets of downtown Cleveland, the Apex Group annual gala was in full swing inside the grand ballroom of the city's premier luxury hotel.

Crystal chandeliers cascaded from the vaulted ceilings, casting a brilliant glow over hundreds of wealthy investors, local politicians, and corporate executives dressed in designer tuxedos and glittering evening gowns. At the center of attention, standing near the VIP balcony overlooking the skyline, was Julian Cross.

Julian raised his crystal flute of champagne, basking in the warm praise of several senior partners from the city's largest real estate development firms.

“To the future of Apex Logistics,” Julian announced smoothly, his voice carrying the practiced confidence of a man who believed he had conquered the world. “With our upcoming expansion into the Midwest distribution corridors, our valuation will double by the end of the quarter. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our key partners—and, of course, the incredible inspiration brought by my wonderful partner, Chloe.”

Chloe Miller beamed beside him, her champagne-colored silk gown shimmering under the lights, the heavy diamond tennis bracelet on her wrist catching every flash. She leaned into Julian’s shoulder, soaking in the applause from the sycophantic crowd.

“You’re destined for the CEO seat by midnight, darling,” Chloe purred, adjusting her diamond necklace. “Speaking of which... did your mousy little wife back in Shaker Heights figure out how to operate the microwave yet, or is she still crying over her worn-out dresses?”

Julian chuckled, a dismissive, arrogant sound. “Clarissa doesn't even know how the real world works, Chloe. She’s harmless. She’s spent three years living in the background like a piece of antique furniture. By tomorrow morning, I’ll have my lawyers serve her the divorce papers, and she can fade back into whatever quiet hole she crawled out of.”

Just as Julian raised his glass to take a sip, the grand mahogany double doors at the opposite end of the ballroom swung open with a resounding, thunderous crash.

The lively chatter across the room stuttered and died.

Every head turned toward the entrance.

Striding into the ballroom wasn't a late-arriving guest or a hotel manager. It was a procession. Four private security guards in sharp black suits entered first, fanning out with silent, intimidating precision to secure the aisles. Behind them walked Marcus Vance, holding a thick leather briefcase like an executioner’s ledger.

And right behind Marcus walked Arthur Vance, flanked by his personal aides.

The air in the ballroom seemed to instantly drop ten degrees. Senior executives, politicians, and bankers froze in absolute, paralyzed shock. Whispers rippled through the crowd like static electricity.

“Arthur Vance? What is he doing here?”

“I thought he retired from public appearances years ago...”

“Look at his security detail. That’s federal-level clearance.”

Julian lowered his champagne flute, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. He didn't know Arthur Vance personally—very few men in the city did—but everyone in Cleveland knew the face of the billionaire industrialist who controlled Vance Global Holdings.

Julian straightened his gray suit jacket, flashing his most charming corporate smile, and stepped forward to intercept the unexpected billionaire guest.

“Mr. Vance,” Julian said, extending his hand with practiced deference as he approached my father near the center aisle. “I’m Julian Cross, Executive VP of Apex Logistics. It is an absolute honor to have you grace our gala tonight. I must say, your presence here is a tremendous surprise for all of us—!”

Arthur Vance did not extend his hand.

He didn't even look at Julian’s outstretched palm. My father stopped dead in his tracks, his cold, piercing eyes locking onto Julian with a level of pure, murderous contempt that made the younger man involuntarily step backward.

“Julian Cross,” my father said, his voice echoing cleanly across the silent, cavernous ballroom without the aid of a microphone. “A rising star in Cleveland logistics. A man who prides himself on his business acumen, his social standing, and his impeccable taste.”

Julian blinked, a nervous twitch appearing at the corner of his eye. “Wh-what an unexpected compliment, sir. If you’re here regarding a potential partnership with Apex—measured by our growth, I assure you—”

“Shut your mouth,” Arthur Vance commanded softly.

The three words hit Julian like a physical blow. The color drained entirely from Julian’s face, leaving him looking like a ghost under the brilliant chandeliers.

“You invited yourself into a house that wasn't yours,” my father continued, stepping closer until Julian was cornered against a velvet-draped pillar. “You treated a queen like a servant. You humiliated my daughter under your roof, parading your little mistress around while boasting about your wealth and power.”

Julian’s breath hitched. His eyes darted around the room, noticing that every single investor, partner, and board member was staring at him in stunned silence. “Daughter? Mr. Vance, I... I don't know what you’re talking about. My wife is Clarissa, she’s a nobody from—!”

“Your wife,” my father interrupted, his voice rising in thunderous volume, “is Clarissa Vance. The sole heir to the Vance Global Holdings empire.”

The ballroom erupted into instant, deafening chaos.
