Chapter 3 - The Performance

Linda marched into the kitchen, expecting to find her son exhausted and victimized by a rebellious bride. Instead, she found Mason sitting rigidly at the counter, looking pale, sweating profusely, and staring at his coffee mug as if it contained poison.

Linda frowned, slamming her handbag onto the kitchen island. "Mason! What on earth is wrong with you? Why do you look like you've seen a ghost? Did this ungrateful girl give you trouble last night?"

Before Mason could form a coherent sentence, Chloe stepped into the kitchen, holding a tablet computer in her hands. Her expression shifted instantly into one of trembling, fragile distress—a masterclass in emotional acting designed to trigger Linda’s absolute predatory satisfaction.

"Oh, Linda... I'm so glad you're here," Chloe whispered, her voice wavering with practiced vulnerability. "Mason and I... we had a terrible argument last night. He told me everything you said. He said a wife has to be kept in line... that my paycheck belongs to you both... and that if I didn't obey, he had your full permission to beat me."

Linda’s eyes widened, not with horror, but with a surge of triumphant vindication. A smug, vicious grin spread across her face.

"Well, finally!" Linda laughed harshly, turning to look at her frozen son. "See, Mason? I told you! A woman only respects a man who knows how to break her spirit. You should have put her in her place hours ago instead of whining to me on the phone!"

Chloe lowered her head, hiding the lethal smirk that touched her lips. She tapped the screen of her tablet. "Is that really what you believe, Linda? That physical violence is the proper way to manage a marriage?"

"Of course it is!" Linda crowed, walking over and crossing her arms, towering over Chloe with arrogant condescension. "I raised Mason to be a real man, not some modern pushover who lets a woman wear the pants. If you don't like the rules of this household, you can pack your bags right now, hand over your bank cards, and leave with nothing!"

Mason buried his face in his hands, his voice muffled and desperate. "Mom... stop. Just stop talking."

"Shut up, Mason, let me handle her," Linda snapped dismissively, turning back to Chloe. "Listen to me, little girl. You signed the marriage certificate, which means your earnings, your dignity, and your obedience belong to this family now. If you raise your voice—or your hands—to my son ever again, I will personally ruin you in this town."

Chloe slowly raised her head. The fragile, trembling act vanished completely, replaced by eyes as cold and sharp as winter ice.

"Thank you, Linda," Chloe said clearly, her voice devoid of any fear. "That was precisely what I needed you to say."
