Chapter 1 - The House of LiesThe silence in the grand hallway was deafening, broken only by the faint, muffled sound of the string quartet playing in the ballroom. Liam stood completely still, his eyes locked on the faded hospital bracelet resting in Sophie’s trembling hands.

"Told you she had died?" Liam’s voice dropped to a terrifyingly quiet whisper. He slowly turned his gaze toward his mother.

Evelyn did not flinch. She adjusted the emerald necklace resting against her collarbone, her expression a mask of aristocratic irritation. "Liam, please. You are listening to a kitchen assistant who clearly has severe psychological delusions. I adopted Emma through a prestigious, closed-agency process. Everything was handled legally."

"Then why did you offer her money to disappear?" Liam demanded, stepping closer to his mother. The aristocratic mask slipped for a fraction of a second.

Sophie stepped forward, her voice raw but steady. "She found me three weeks ago when I started asking questions at St. Jude’s Medical Archives. I was only looking for a birth certificate. The next day, a black town car pulled up to my apartment. She handed me a check for five hundred thousand dollars and told me that if I ever came near you, she would have me arrested for extortion."

"Because you are an extortionist!" Evelyn snapped.

Liam held up a hand, silencing his mother instantly. He looked at Sophie, seeing her clearly for the first time. Beneath the oversized catering uniform, she was painfully thin, exhausted, yet her eyes—the exact same bright, soulful hazel as his eight-year-old daughter’s—burned with an undeniable truth.

"Evelyn, get out," Liam said.

"This is my family's estate!" Evelyn gasped.

"It is my house," Liam corrected, his voice like ice. "And until I verify every single word this woman just said, you are not to step foot on this property, nor are you to go anywhere near Emma. Leave. Now."

Evelyn’s face flushed with fury. She grabbed her designer clutch and stormed toward the door, turning back one last time. "You will regret this, Liam. She will destroy everything we have built."

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut, Liam turned back to Sophie. She looked as though she was about to collapse. He gently guided her to a chair in his study and locked the door.

"Tell me everything," he said softly. "From the night she was born."
