Chapter 5 - The Legal BattlefieldWithin seventy-two hours, Liam Carter’s life had dissolved into a living nightmare.

Not only had he been fired in disgrace from Apex Global Technologies, but his professional reputation was permanently incinerated. Every major tech firm in the tri-state area had blacklisted him. Paige Miller had vanished from her apartment by noon on Tuesday, refusing to answer his calls or texts the moment she realized her luxury lease was tied to embezzled funds that were now frozen by federal investigators.

And back at home, Emma had already filed for divorce.

Not a quiet, amicable separation. A scorched-earth legal petition citing adultery, financial fraud, abandonment, and emotional abuse, backed by ironclad financial records and sworn affidavits from both sets of parents.

Liam sat in a cramped, sterile meeting room at his divorce lawyer’s office, staring blankly at the table. His hair was unwashed, his designer suit wrinkled, and the arrogant confidence that had defined him for years was completely gone.

His attorney, a weary middle-aged man named Marcus, tossed a thick stack of legal documents onto the table with a heavy sigh.

"I've reviewed the settlement terms Emma’s legal team filed this morning, Liam," Marcus said bluntly. "You need to sign them."

Liam blinked, looking up with bloodshot eyes. "Sign them? What are the terms? We can fight this! We can claim asset division—!"

"There are no assets left to divide, Liam," Marcus interrupted harshly. "Your personal bank accounts have been frozen due to the corporate embezzlement investigation. Your stock options were forfeited upon your termination for cause. The house is mortgaged under Emma’s pre-nuptial protection trust, meaning you have zero equity claim to it."

Liam’s jaw dropped. "Zero?! What about my car? My savings?!"

"Emma’s lawyers secured a full indemnification clause," Marcus explained, leaning forward. "She is taking sole custody of your daughter, granting you supervised visitation only after you complete a court-ordered anger management evaluation. Furthermore, you are waiving all alimony claims, and you will be responsible for ninety percent of legal fees."

"This is insane!" Liam shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "She’s destroying me! She’s taking everything I built!"

"She’s taking what belongs to her and protecting her child," Marcus corrected coldly. "And honestly, Liam? You’re lucky she isn't personally testifying as a cooperating witness for the federal prosecutor. If she did, you’d be facing five to ten years in a federal penitentiary."

Liam slumped back in his chair, the crushing reality finally settling over his chest like a lead weight.

He had thought Emma was weak. He had thought she was tied down by the baby, exhausted by motherhood, and too trusting to ever look behind the curtain.

He had underestimated her. And that single mistake had cost him everything.

With shaking hands, Liam picked up the pen and signed his name on the dotted line, sealing his own destruction.
