Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the PastThe fever passed, leaving Nico sleeping peacefully in his crib under the watchful eye of a private night nurse. Serena sat at the heavy oak dining table, staring out at the misty morning fog rolling over the apple orchards. The events of the previous night had shaken her foundations. She had wanted to believe that Lucian was a monster incapable of genuine remorse—that his absence during labor was just another calculated betrayal in a long line of selfishness.

Instead, she was forced to confront an agonizing truth: Lucian Moretti was a monster who had completely dismantled his own darkness the moment it cost him his family.
On a Tuesday morning, a formal courier dropped off a thick legal packet. It was the final divorce decree, fully executed, signed by a New York supreme court judge, and countersigned by Lucian. There were no hidden clauses, no sneaky asset stipulations, and no custody disputes. He had granted her absolute freedom, complete financial independence, and sole legal and physical custody of Nico.
At the bottom of the document was a short, handwritten note:
Serena,
The papers are finalized. You are entirely free of me, my name, and my world. The farmhouse is yours forever; no one will ever disturb your peace there. I only ask one thing—if Nico ever asks about his father when he grows up, don't tell him I didn't love him. Tell him I loved him so much that I let him go so he could live in the light.
— Lucian.
Serena read the words three times, a heavy lump forming in her throat. She had won every single thing she asked for. She had escaped the gilded cage, punished her cheating husband, and secured her son's future. So why did her chest ache as if she had lost everything?
That afternoon, she decided to drive into the nearby historic village to clear her mind. The air was crisp, smelling of wet pine and blooming lilacs. She parked her sedan near the village square and walked into the local artisan café, hoping a cup of coffee and a quiet corner would anchor her chaotic thoughts.
As she sat by the window, watching the small-town bustle outside, a tall, elegantly dressed woman walked into the café.
Serena froze.
It was Bianca Romano.
Gone was the silk villa glamour of Sicily. Bianca wore a sharp black trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a severe bun, her expression tense and desperate. She scanned the small café, her eyes locking onto Serena instantly. Instead of turning around, Bianca walked straight toward Serena’s table, her heels clicking sharply against the wooden floorboards.
"Serena Moretti," Bianca said, her voice laced with a bitter, exhausted edge.
Serena stood up slowly, her maternal instincts flaring instantly. "You have a lot of nerve coming here, Bianca. If Lucian’s men find you in this town, you won't live to see sunset."
Bianca let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Lucian’s men? Lucian doesn't care about me, Serena. He never did. Do you honestly think I was the great love affair of the feared Lucian Moretti?"
Serena narrowed her eyes. "He left his pregnant wife to be with you in Sicily."
"He went to Sicily because the Romano syndicate threatened to unleash a smear campaign against your family if he didn't meet with my father," Bianca spat, her eyes flashing with humiliation. "I was a pawn in a mob negotiation. The photos sent to your sister? Staged by my father’s inner circle to force a crack in Duca’s alliances. And Lucian... when he found out those photos reached you while you were in labor, he nearly broke my father’s jaw with his bare hands in front of the entire Sicilian council."
Serena’s breath hitched. "What?"
"You think he wanted me in that villa?" Bianca stepped closer, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He spent every single night locked in his study, drinking scotch and staring at your photograph, ignoring me completely while I played the decorative fool for the cameras. The night your son was born, Lucian threw a heavy glass tumbler straight through a priceless antique mirror when Marco told him you were in labor and he couldn't reach you because my father jammed the local cell towers."

Bianca pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, her eyes swimming with bitter tears. "You destroyed a terrifying empire without firing a single shot, Serena. You broke a man who was unbreakable. And the pathetic part is... he still loves you more than his own life."
Without waiting for a response, Bianca turned on her heel and walked out of the café, leaving Serena standing in stunned silence as the earth shifted beneath her feet.
