Chapter 1 - The Echo of an Empty RoomThe white walls of Mercy General Hospital’s private maternity suite seemed to hum with an antiseptic chill that cut straight through the heavy silence.

In her arms rested Nico. At just a day old, he was a miniature storm of dark, thick hair, tiny clenched fists, and a fierce, indignant cry that had already captured the heart of every nurse on the floor. Serena pressed her cheek against his soft, warm crown, breathing in the sweet, powdery scent of newborn life. Her fingers traced the delicate curve of his jawline—a jawline that mirrored the sharp, uncompromising features of the man who wasn’t there.
The heavy oak door of the suite creaked open, breaking her trance.
Lucian Moretti stepped inside, his long, dark overcoat damp from the storm, carrying the faint, expensive scent of cedarwood, scotch, and cold rain. Dark circles carved deep beneath his piercing gray eyes betrayed a sleepless night, and his broad shoulders, usually squared with absolute dominion over the Manhattan underworld, carried a strange, unfamiliar heaviness. In his left hand, he clutched the legal envelope Elena had handed him just moments before—Eleanor Price’s divorce petition.
"Serena," Lucian’s voice was a low, rough baritone that had once commanded boardrooms, courtrooms, and criminal syndicates with a single sentence. Now, it wavered with an insecurity he had never dared show anyone.
Serena did not look up immediately. She continued to stroke Nico’s back, feeling the baby’s steady, rhythmic heartbeat against her own. Only when Lucian took a slow, tentative step toward the bed did she raise her eyes. Her gaze was as cold and sharp as broken glass.
"You missed it, Lucian," Serena said, her voice terrifyingly calm. There was no screaming, no red-faced fury, no tearful accusation. That woman had died during the fourteen hours she spent staring at an empty chair while bringing their son into the world. "You missed fourteen hours of contractions. You missed the moment his heart rate dropped. You missed his first breath."
Lucian stepped closer, his jaw tightening as he looked down at the infant he had not been allowed to hold. "Serena, the situation in Sicily... the Romano family summit... it was a powder keg. If I hadn't flown down personally to stabilize the shipping routes, our entire portfolio—everything I built for our family's future—would have collapsed overnight. I was trying to protect us."
"Protect us?" Serena’s laugh was a dry, chilling sound. "You were three thousand miles away in a white villa above the Sicilian coast, sitting across from Bianca Romano in white silk while your wife screamed through labor contractions in a public hospital. Don't talk to me about protection, Lucian. You protect your empire. We were just things you kept in the penthouse to look respectable."
Lucian flinched as if struck across the face. He looked down at the legal papers in his hand, the stark black text of the divorce petition staring back at him like a death sentence. "You filed for divorce. You hired Eleanor Price—the woman who took down half the billionaires on the Upper East Side. You didn't even give me a warning."
"Warnings are for people who respect each other," Serena replied steadily, shifting Nico slightly as the baby stirred. "You stopped respecting me years ago, Lucian. You just didn't notice because I kept swallowing the disrespect, the disappearances, and the whispers about your mistresses. Well, the woman who swallowed your lies is gone. You killed her the moment you chose Bianca’s bed over your son’s birth."
Lucian dropped his gaze to Nico, his eyes burning with a desperate, frantic intensity. "Serena... please. Name your terms. You want the Hamptons estate? It’s yours. You want the Swiss accounts, full autonomy, a hundred million dollars transferred to your name alone? Done. Just... don't do this. Don't take my son away from me."
May you like
"Your son?" Serena’s eyes flashed with sudden, blinding fury. "You don't get to call him your son, Lucian. Not after you couldn't be bothered to answer a phone call while I pushed him into the world. These papers aren't a negotiation. They are an exit. And my lawyer will ensure you never see us again."
With that, Serena turned her back to him, cradling Nico protectively against her chest, leaving the undisputed king of Manhattan standing alone in the dark shadows of the hospital room.
