Chapter 5 - The Federal Indictment

The fluorescent lights of the federal interrogation and conference room hummed softly overhead. Seated across the polished oak table was Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Miller—a sharp, uncompromising prosecutor known in the Southern District as a corporate shark who had never lost a white-collar racketeering case.
Miller slowly closed the physical file folder containing the printed bank statements, encrypted hard drive transcripts, and the notarized medical conspiracies signed by Charles Vane. She looked up at Clare, who sat upright and unyielding despite the damp clothes and the physical toll of the high-speed bridge chase.
"Mrs. Callahan," Miller said, her voice a mix of awe and profound gravity. "If even half of what is on these drives checks out, this is the biggest corporate corruption and international trafficking case in New York history. You’re talking about asset laundering for the Ivanov syndicate, illegal genetic experimentation bypasses, and a premeditated conspiracy to commit forced psychiatric kidnapping."
"It all checks out," Clare stated flatly, sliding a signed affidavit across the table. "I personally translated the initial offshore incorporation documents five years ago. I know the structural loopholes Dominic used to hide his accounts. And I have the exact cryptographic keys to unlock every shell company he owns."
Miller stared at her for a long moment before nodding briskly. She picked up her desk phone. "Get the magistrate judge on the line immediately. I want emergency arrest warrants for Dominic Prescott Callahan and Charles Vane issued under seal. Charge them with federal racketeering, conspiracy, and attempted illegal confinement."
Just as Miller set the phone down, the heavy double doors of the conference room burst open.
Marcus stood in the doorway, his phone pressed to his ear, his face pale. "Clare, you need to see this now."
He turned the screen of his burner phone toward her. A live financial news broadcast from Wall Street was flashing urgent breaking headlines across the ticker:
BREAKING NEWS: Federal agents have just executed simultaneous search and seizure warrants at the headquarters of Callahan Maritime in Manhattan and the private residence of CEO Dominic Callahan. Trading of Callahan stock has been completely halted amid allegations of massive international racketeering and corporate fraud.
Clare stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window that overlooked the rainy skyline of New York. Down below, parked right in front of the federal building, a convoy of black-and-white police cruisers and unmarked federal vans had just pulled up.
And stepping out of the lead cruiser, flanked by federal marshals with their hands cuffed securely behind his back, was Dominic Callahan.
His custom Brioni suit was rumpled, his hair was out of place, and the cold, arrogant sneer that usually defined his face had been replaced by an expression of absolute, shattered disbelief. As the camera flashes blinded him from the press pool across the street, Dominic’s eyes instinctively darted upward toward the federal windows.

Across the distance, through the rain-streaked glass, their eyes locked for one final, definitive moment.
Dominic’s lips moved, framing a silent, desperate question as the marshals shoved him toward the steps of the federal courthouse. But Clare didn't bother to read his lips. She turned her back on him, walking away without a single ounce of hesitation, her hand resting warmly and securely over her healthy, kicking son.
