Chapter 3 - The Ghost Asset and the Rival Syndicate

By noon, the news of Clare’s disappearance had already sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of Manhattan society. On a breakfast TV broadcast playing softly on an old radio in the corner of the workshop, a breathless anchor reported that billionaire shipping magnate Dominic Callahan was offering a private reward for any information regarding the safe return of his "distressed, heavily pregnant wife," who had allegedly suffered a severe psychiatric episode and wandered out into the freezing night.
Clare stared at the radio screen, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "He’s framing the narrative already. If anyone sees me on the street and calls his private security, I’ll be dragged into a van before I can even shout my own name."
"Let him look," Marcus said, tossing a secure satellite phone across the table. "I’ve been making a few calls to old contacts in the Federal Maritime Commission and the Department of Justice’s antitrust division. But we need hard evidence of his illegal cargo shipments—the real reason he’s moving so fast to silence you. If he has a hereditary heart condition passing to your son, and he’s planning a secret treatment abroad, it means he’s using unauthorized, experimental gene therapies funded by the black-market syndicate he uses to smuggle contraband through the New Jersey ports."
Clare frowned, memory flashing back to late nights in Dominic’s office months ago when she had found encrypted shipping manifests labeled PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH. At the time, Dominic had dismissed them as legitimate medical imports for a biotech startup he backed. Now, the terrifying puzzle pieces clicked together.
"The private clinic in Switzerland isn't just a sanitarium," Clare realized aloud, her breath catching. "It’s a front for illegal human trials funded by the Ivanov syndicate—the very group Dominic pretends to fight in public while laundering their money through Callahan Maritime."
Marcus’s eyes widened. "If you can prove that, Dominic isn't just facing a messy divorce. He’s looking at federal racketeering, treason charges, and a permanent federal prison sentence where no amount of money can buy him out."
"Then let’s give the feds a package they can’t ignore," Clare said resolutely.
She sat down at the terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she accessed the hidden partition of the cloud storage drive she had downloaded from the penthouse. She bypassed the domestic files and dug straight into Dominic’s personal server logs—files he thought he had permanently deleted three years ago.
There it was: the original wire transfers linking Callahan Maritime directly to the Ivanov syndicate’s offshore accounts, signed off by Dominic Prescott Callahan himself, with Charles Vane acting as the legal notary.
Suddenly, the burner phone on the desk buzzed violently. An unknown number flashed across the screen.
Marcus picked it up, routed it through a voice-masker and a triple proxy, and answered cautiously. "Speak."
A harsh, metallic voice filtered through the speaker—a voice that sounded like grinding stones. "Tell Mrs. Callahan that running is a very expensive hobby. Mr. Callahan’s private security units are already sweeping Brooklyn. And if she thinks her little cyber-friend in Red Hook can protect her from the Russian delegation currently dining with Dominic at the Waldorf Astoria, she’s gravely mistaken."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Marcus slammed the phone down onto the metal table, his face draining of color. "They tracked your burner’s ping through the cell tower relay. They know we’re here."

Clare stood up immediately, her hand resting on her heavy belly. The baby gave a sharp, protective kick, as if sensing the danger closing in around them. There was no time for fear. If they stayed in Red Hook, they would be cornered like rats before nightfall.
"We move," Clare ordered, her voice ironclad. "We take the data, we dump it onto physical secure drives, and we go straight to the one federal prosecutor in the Eastern District who hasn't been bought off by Dominic’s syndicate."
