Chapter 4 - The Ambush on the Williamsburg Bridge

The heavy rain was hammering down on the roof of Marcus’s battered Ford transit van as they crossed into the on-ramp of the Williamsburg Bridge. The city lights blurred into streaks of neon and gray through the smeared windshield. In the passenger seat, Clare clutched a reinforced steel briefcase containing the physical hard drives and encrypted backups of Dominic’s entire criminal enterprise.
"Almost there," Marcus muttered, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror. "Federal Plaza is just across the river. Once we walk through those doors and hand this over to Agent Miller, Dominic’s entire house of cards comes tumbling down."
Suddenly, a massive black SUV surged out from behind a transport truck, accelerating with terrifying speed. Its high-beams flashed blindingly into their rear window, and before Marcus could react, the SUV slammed its heavy reinforced bumper directly into the driver’s side of the van, sending a violent shockwave through the cabin.
"Hold on!" Marcus roared, spinning the steering wheel to counter-steer as metal shrieked against metal.
Another black vehicle pulled up on their right, boxing them in against the concrete barrier of the bridge. The rain lashed down as shadowy figures in tactical gear emerged from the sunroofs of the flanking cars, brandishing heavy-duty suppression rifles equipped with thermal scopes.
"They’re trying to force us off the bridge!" Clare shouted, her maternal protective instinct overriding every drop of fear in her veins. She unbuckled her safety harness, reached over the center console, and grabbed a heavy crowbar from Marcus’s tool kit.
"Clare, what are you doing? Stay down!" Marcus yelled as a bullet punched clean through the passenger-side window, shattering safety glass all over her lap.
"They aren't here to kill us yet—they want the briefcase!" Clare yelled over the deafening roar of the wind and engine. "If they get these drives, we’re dead anyway!"
As the passenger door of the attacking SUV slid open and a masked operative leaned out to grab the handle of their van's sliding door, Clare didn't hesitate. With a feral scream of pure fury, she slammed the heavy iron crowbar down onto the operative’s fingers with bone-crushing force.
The man let out a blood-curdling howl and dropped his weapon, tumbling backward out of the moving SUV and crashing onto the wet asphalt of the bridge behind them.
"That's for my son!" Clare snarled, pulling the sliding door shut and locking it tight.
Marcus hit the gas hard, utilizing the heavy torque of the modified transit engine to ram the front vehicle out of their lane, creating a narrow gap just wide enough to squeeze through. With a screech of burning rubber and flying sparks, the van rocketed past the blockade, taking the exit ramp toward downtown Manhattan at breakneck speed.

Twenty minutes later, the battered Ford van slammed to a halt directly in front of the Federal Plaza security gates.
Clare threw open the door, clutched the steel briefcase to her chest, and marched right past the startled armed guards, her eyes blazing with the unstoppable fury of a mother who had just stared into the abyss and refused to blink.
