Chapter 4 - The Fall of Marcus Reynolds"Claire...?!" Sophia shrieked, her voice reaching a high, hysterical pitch that echoed off the high ceiling. "What the hell is she doing here?! Security! Remove that woman!"

Marcus Reynolds stood up slowly from the head table, his face turning an ugly, paper-white shade of shock as he looked at Vincent and me walking down the central carpeted aisle together.

"Vincent," Marcus barked, his hand moving subtly toward his inner coat pocket. "You signed the separation decree two months ago! You have no right to bring this girl into a trust meeting!"

Vincent didn't draw a weapon. He didn't even raise his voice.

He walked up to the central executive podium, stopping three feet from Marcus Reynolds, setting an encrypted tablet flat onto the mahogany wood.

With a single tap of his thumb, the massive projection screen above the stage illuminated with high-definition digital text.

The red numbers lit up the ballroom:

FEDERAL RICO INDICTMENTS: CASE #8841-IL — Issued at 6:00 PM today by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

CHARGES: Extortion, Illegal Wiretapping, Federal Conspiracy, and Attempted Murder against Marcus Reynolds & Sophia Reynolds.

SEIZURE OF ASSETS: Full federal forfeiture of Reynolds Syndicate maritime accounts, returning sixty-two percent of disputed trust equity directly to Claire Moretti & Her Issue.

Marcus Reynolds let out a guttural, furious roar, pulling a suppressed sidearm from his coat. "YOU TRAITOROUS BASTARD, MORETTI!"

THWIP!

Before Marcus's finger could touch the trigger, a high-velocity round fired by Leo from the secondary balcony punched cleanly through Marcus’s right shoulder, knocking him sideways onto the carpeted floorboards.

BOOM!

The heavy double side doors of the ballroom were thrown open as thirty fully armed Federal Marshals swept into the room, their weapons trained directly on the remaining syndicate lieutenants.

"DROP YOUR WEAPONS! FEDERAL AGENTS!" the lead marshal bellowed.

Sophia thrashed wildly, screaming curses as two female marshals slapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists, forcing her flat against the table.

CLICK. CLICK.

Marcus Reynolds groaned in agony as two marshals pinned him flat to the carpet, locking a second set of steel restraints around his wrists before dragging him out toward the waiting police vans in chains.

The three hundred corporate guests stood in complete, spellbound silence as the entire Reynolds syndicate was dismantled in less than three minutes.

Vincent turned toward the master microphone, wrapping his broad arm around my waist, pulling my body flush against his solid chest, looking out over the sea of Chicago's elite.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Vincent announced flatly. His thunderous baritone echoed through the speakers with absolute, unyielding authority. "My wife, Donna Claire Moretti, remains the sole, undisputed matriarch of the Moretti family. Anyone who ever threatens my family again... will answer to me."
