Chapter 2 - The Web of the SyndicateI stood frozen in the doorway as the truth crashed over my mind like a tidal wave of cold iron.

For five years, I had believed Vincent was an emotionally distant man who cared only for power and corporate dominance. I had convinced myself that his late nights and missed dinners were signs of a husband who regretted marrying an ordinary girl with no high-society pedigree.

Instead, my husband had been fighting a silent, desperate war against an international syndicate that had used his own father's sins to trap him in an absolute, suffocating vise.

"Get up, Vincent," I said softly, stepping back from the threshold and opening the apartment door wider.

Vincent looked up, his bloodshot eyes searching my face with a mixture of profound disbelief and desperate hope.

He stood up fluidly, stepping inside our small living room, shutting the heavy wooden door behind him, locking the deadbolt with a sharp, practiced snap.

I set baby Oliver gently into his crib beside his twin brother, Ethan, who was sleeping peacefully under a warm blanket. Then I walked back into the living room, sitting on the small velvet sofa beside Noah, who had curled up against my side.

Vincent sat on the opposite armchair, setting the yellowed leather notebook flat onto the coffee table between us.

"Who else knows about this covenant, Vincent?" I demanded, my hazel eyes locking onto his face with a razor-sharp clarity that surprised even myself.

"Only my lead security lieutenant, Leo, and my estate attorney, Lucas Vance," Vincent answered, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register. "For sixty days, I played the arrogant, heartbroken fool. I let Marcus Reynolds believe he had completely broken me. I let Sophia move into the Lake Forest estate... while Leo's team quietly mapped every illegal bank account, wire-transfer route, and armed safehouse Marcus operates in Chicago."

I picked up the leather notebook, opening the brittle pages.

Inside were precise handwriting logs, dates, offshore account numbers, and recorded wiretaps detailing a five-hundred-million-dollar extortion plot orchestrated by Marcus Reynolds and Sophia to strip the Moretti empire of its legitimate shipping assets.

"And Marcus's men?" I asked. "Are they still watching us?"

Vincent offered a faint, dangerous smile—the first glimpse of the feared Don who ruled Chicago's corporate sector.

"Leo's team intercepted Marcus's three surveillance vans twenty minutes ago, Claire," Vincent revealed flatly. "They're currently sitting in a federal holding facility downtown. The trap is set. But to pull the trigger... I need the one thing Marcus believes I lost forever."

"What?" I asked.

Vincent looked straight into my eyes, his storm-gray gaze shining with an absolute, unshakeable devotion. "My wife."
