Chapter 4 - The Calloway ConnectionThe fallout didn't stay private for long. High-society Denver was a small, vicious fishbowl, and when a high-profile cloud-security executive files for a multi-million-dollar emergency asset freeze against her unemployed husband and exposes a massive embezzlement scheme tied to the Calloway family, the tabloids caught wind of it almost instantly.

By Friday morning, headlines blared across local news sites and gossip columns: TECH HEIRESS CLAIRE STERLING FILES MULTI-MILLION FRAUD LAWSUIT AGAINST HUSBAND RYAN VOSS; EXPOSES SECRET AFFAIR WITH SOCIALITE SAVANNAH CALLOWAY.

I was sitting in Marcus’s downtown law office reviewing deposition schedules when my secretary buzzed through an unexpected visitor.

"Claire, you have a visitor in conference room B," Marcus said, looking up from his tablet. "It’s Savannah Calloway. She’s demanding to speak with you."

I raised an eyebrow. "Savannah? Has she lost her mind?"

"She claims her assets were frozen alongside Ryan’s because the Aspen estate was purchased with commingled funds," Marcus explained, leaning back in his leather chair. "She thinks she can intimidate you into dropping the financial freeze. Do you want me to throw her out, or do you want to play chess?"

A cold, knowing smile touched my lips. "Let’s play chess."

Five minutes later, I pushed open the glass door of Conference Room B. Savannah Calloway sat at the polished mahogany table, looking immaculate in a cream designer trench coat, her blonde hair styled in pristine waves, though her eyes were darting around nervously.

When I walked in—carrying myself with the absolute confidence of a woman who owned the building she was sitting in—her expression shifted from anxious to venomous.

"Claire," Savannah sneered, crossing her arms. "I hope you realize what a catastrophic mistake you're making with these ridiculous embezzlement claims."

I pulled out the chair opposite her, sat down slowly, and rested my hands gracefully on the table. "Mistake, Savannah? Freezing stolen funds and prosecuting financial fraud is pretty standard business practice."

"Ryan loves me, not you!" Savannah hissed, her composure cracking under pressure as the high-society mask slipped. "You were always too busy with your stupid tech company, flying all over the country, acting like a corporate queen while Ryan was suffocating in your shadow! We built a life together—the Aspen estate is mine!"

"It was purchased with 1.4 million dollars of my personal venture capital dividends transferred without my authorization," I replied, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "In the state of Colorado, that isn't building a life, Savannah. That’s wire fraud and grand larceny. And since your name is on the deed of the property purchased with those stolen funds, you are formally named as a co-defendant in the criminal indictment."

Savannah’s face drained of all color. The haughty socialite act evaporated instantly.

"Co-defendant?" she whispered, her voice shaking. "You... you can't put me in prison! My father's name—"

"Your father’s name couldn't save your family's shipping syndicate from bankruptcy last year, and it certainly won't save you from federal felony charges," I interrupted, standing up smoothly and smoothing down my blazer. "Have a nice chat with your defense attorney, Savannah. You're going to need a very good one."

I walked out of the conference room, leaving her staring blankly at the polished table, realizing for the first time that her wealth, her status, and her charm meant absolutely nothing against a woman who held all the cards.
