Chapter 2 - The Audit of BetrayalThe morning sun filtered coldly through the hospital blinds, casting long, sharp shadows across the white sheets. I hadn't slept a wink. Every time I closed my eyes, I could still smell the burnt cashmere and feel the callous weight of Ryan’s hands pinning my wrists. But the initial shock had completely solidified into something much more dangerous: absolute, unyielding clarity.

Around 9:00 AM, Marcus Vance walked into my private room. Marcus was a shark in a tailored charcoal suit, silver-streaked hair, and eyes that missed nothing. He didn't offer sympathy; he offered cold, hard facts—which was exactly what I needed.

"How are you and the baby, Claire?" Marcus asked, his tone brisk but professional as he pulled a leather briefcase onto his lap.

"The doctor says the baby is resilient, strong heartbeat, no contractions," I replied, my voice steady as I sat up against the pillows. "What did you find, Marcus? What did you mean by 'involving my money'?"

Marcus opened his briefcase and laid out three thick folders containing bank statements, corporate wire transfers, and notarized signatures.

"When you married Ryan three years ago, you trusted him," Marcus began, his voice dropping into a serious register. "You gave him limited signatory power on your personal investment account so he could manage the property taxes and household bills while you traveled for corporate expansions. You thought it was a convenience."

"It was," I said, a cold knot tightening in my stomach. "For routine estate expenses."

"It was a blank check," Marcus corrected, sliding a specific document across the tray table. "Over the last fourteen months, Ryan didn't just pay the bills. He systematically drained your liquid venture capital accounts. He transferred over 1.4 million dollars into a shell corporation named Vance & Calloway Holdings."

I stared at the name, blinking in confusion. "Calloway? As in... Savannah Calloway? My former college roommate?"

"The very same," Marcus nodded grimly. "Our preliminary trace shows that Ryan and Savannah have been having an affair for nearly two years. The shell company bought a multi-million-dollar equestrian estate in Aspen—placed entirely in Savannah’s name, funded by your tech stock dividends. Furthermore, Grant and Diane have been receiving monthly allowances of twenty-five thousand dollars each, funneled straight from your personal dividends without your knowledge."

The silence in the room became deafening.

My husband—the man who had watched his father press a burning cigarette into my pregnant belly—wasn't just emotionally detached; he was a literal embezzler who had been funding a lavish double life with my sweat and blood while his family mocked me behind my back.

"Can we freeze the accounts?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

May you like

"They’re already frozen," Marcus said with a faint, predatory smirk. "I filed an emergency injunction at 6:00 AM based on domestic abuse, financial fraud, and corporate embezzlement. By the time Ryan woke up in your penthouse this morning, his credit cards were declined, his bank apps were locked, and the corporate security team had already revoked his building access keys."

I looked out the window toward the snow-capped Rocky Mountains. Ryan had wanted to play high-society mafia with his family, treating me like a tenant in my own home. Now, he was about to find out what happened when a tenant locked the gates and threw away the key.
