Chapter 4 - The CrucibleThe next twenty days changed Jake Carter completely.

He didn't hire aggressive defense attorneys to challenge the protective orders. Instead, he instructed Arthur Vance to grant every single request Victoria Sterling put forward without argument.
He stepped down as CEO of Carter Development, appointing a neutral board director to manage the firm, and dedicated twenty hours a day to dismantling the lifestyle that had corrupted him. He entered intensive therapy, began working with a local charity building low-income housing, and personally penned a forty-page letter to Emily—not making excuses, not begging for forgiveness, but documenting every detail of his repentance and outlining the trust funds he had secured for Harper.
He didn't send the letter. He kept it in his pocket, waiting for a day he wasn't sure would ever come.
On the morning of October 14th, at 3:15 a.m., Jake’s phone rang.
Because the protective order was active, he only had one emergency contact line open through Victoria Sterling’s legal firm.
He snatched the phone off his nightstand instantly. "Hello?"
"Jake," Victoria Sterling’s crisp, authoritative voice came through the speaker. "Listen to me carefully. Emily’s water broke two hours early. There are complications. She’s currently at Cottage Health Hospital in Santa Barbara."
Jake’s blood went cold. "Complications? What complications?"
"Her blood pressure spiked dangerously—preeclampsia," Victoria said. "The doctors are prepping her for an emergency C-section. Emily refused to put your name on the visitor list, but... as her legal counsel, I am exercising my discretion to inform you. If you want to be in that hospital building when your daughter is born, you have forty-five minutes to get here."
Jake didn't drop the phone. He didn't grab a coat. He ran out of the house barefoot, grabbed his keys, and tore down the driveway into the night.
The drive from Pasadena to Santa Barbara normally took an hour and forty minutes. Jake made it in fifty-two minutes, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs as he prayed out loud to every power in the universe.
Please protect her. Please keep Emily safe. Please don't take them away from me.
He burst through the doors of Cottage Health Hospital at 4:18 a.m., his hair soaked with sweat, his clothes disheveled.
He sprinted through the surgical wing corridor, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw Evelyn standing outside the double doors of Operating Room 3.
"Evelyn!" Jake gasped, leaning against the wall, catching his breath. "Is she... is she okay?"
Evelyn turned around. Her face was pale, but as she looked at Jake—at the utter, naked terror and absolute love raw on his face—her eyes softened.
"She's still in surgery," Evelyn whispered. "They had to put her under general anesthesia, Jake. It was getting too dangerous."
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the operating room swung open.
A pediatrician walked out, pushing a clear glass bassinet. Inside, wrapped in a pink blanket with a tiny striped hat, was a small, crying infant.
Jake froze. His breath caught in his throat.
"Father?" the nurse asked, looking between Evelyn and Jake.

Jake looked at Evelyn, afraid to step forward, terrified of violating the boundary.
Evelyn nodded gently, tears shining in her eyes. "Go on, Jake. Meet your daughter."
