Chapter 2 - The Paper FortressAt 9:00 a.m., Jake slammed open the glass doors of Carter Development’s corporate headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. His eyes were bloodshot, his tie loosened, and his usual charming posture completely shattered.

"Mr. Carter!" his executive assistant, Sarah, gasped, jumping up from her desk. "You missed the 8:30 strategy briefing. The board members are waiting—"
"Cancel them," Jake ordered brusquely, walking into his corner office. "Cancel every meeting, every dinner, and every conference for the next month."
"Sir? But the Riviera Hotel acquisition—"
"I don't care about the hotel, Sarah!" Jake shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. He caught himself, breathing heavily, and closed his eyes. "I'm sorry. Just... clear my schedule. Find Arthur Vance and tell him to get into my office right now."
Ten minutes later, Arthur Vance—Jake’s senior corporate legal counsel and long-time friend—stepped into the office, carrying a leather briefcase. His face was grim.
"You don't need to call me, Jake," Arthur said quietly, setting the briefcase on the glass desk. "I was already on my way here."
Jake looked up, a flash of hope igniting in his chest. "Did you find her? Do you know where Emily went?"
Arthur let out a slow, heavy sigh and pulled a legal packet from his bag. He slid it across the table.
"She didn't just leave you, Jake. She executed a masterclass in legal extraction," Arthur revealed, pointing at the dark blue stamp on the cover. "This was served to my office at 8:00 a.m. sharp. It's a formal petition for legal separation, combined with a temporary restraining order and a full freeze on all joint liquid assets."
Jake stared at the papers. "Who is representing her?"
"Victoria Sterling."
Jake’s heart sank. Victoria Sterling was the most feared family law attorney in California—a woman notorious for systematically stripping high-net-worth unfaithful husbands of every penny, property, and corporate privilege they possessed.
"She hired Sterling three months ago, Jake," Arthur explained, looking at his friend with a mixture of pity and disappointment. "While you were buying diamond necklaces for Sienna Brooks, Emily was granting Sterling full access to your personal phone records, financial transactions, and hotel receipts. She has every single date, every wire transfer, and every piece of evidence from the last ninety days."
"I don't care about the money, Arthur!" Jake yelled, slamming his hand on the desk. "She can have the house, the company, the bank accounts! I just want my wife! I want my daughter!"
"It’s not that simple," Arthur countered gently. "Victoria Sterling filed an emergency protective petition based on emotional cruelty and financial negligence. Because Emily is eight months pregnant, the court granted an immediate non-disclosure seal on her current physical address. Legally, if you go within five hundred feet of her or attempt to track her location through private investigators, you will be arrested for violation of a court order."
Jake felt the room spin. He leaned against his desk, staring at the legal papers signed by the woman who used to fall asleep with her head on his chest every night.

"She locked me out completely," Jake whispered, his voice trembling.
"You locked her out first, Jake," Arthur said softly. "The moment you turned your phone off on your anniversary."
