Chapter 1 - The Ruins of a LegacyThe silent house felt like an interrogation room, every empty corner demanding answers Jake Carter didn't have. He stood in the stripped nursery, staring at the faint outlines where Harper’s name had been posted on the wall, clutching Emily’s wedding ring so tightly the gold edges bit into his palm.

He continued scrolling through his phone, his thumb trembling over the blue light of the screen.

9:12 p.m.: The baby is kicking so hard tonight. She knows it’s our special night, Jake. Please call me back.

10:45 p.m.: I’m leaving the blue dress on the bed. The food is getting cold.

11:58 p.m.: Happy anniversary, Jake. I hope she was worth it.

Jake dropped to his knees right on the hardwood floor of the bare room. The realization hit him like a physical blow, knocking the air straight from his lungs.

He had spent thirty-six months building his commercial real estate empire, convincing himself that late nights, expensive dinners, and high-profile social circles were necessary sacrifices for his family’s future. Along the way, Sienna Brooks—a wealthy investor's daughter with zero moral boundaries—had slipped into his life, flattering his ego and offering an escape from the quiet, domestic reality waiting for him at home.

He had told himself Sienna was just a temporary distraction, a harmless game. He believed Emily was too soft, too trusting, and too deeply in love with him to ever notice.

“I’ve known for three months.”

The words from her letter scorched his mind. For ninety days, while he had lied about late board meetings and emergency site visits, Emily had sat across from him at the breakfast table, carrying his unborn child, silently watching him slip further away into another woman's arms.

"God... what have I done?" Jake sobbed, burying his face in his hands.

His phone vibrated in his palm. He snapped it up instantly, praying to see Emily's name.

It wasn't Emily. It was Sienna.

"Jake, darling," Sienna’s voice purred lazily through the speaker. "You left your watch on the nightstand at the Ritz. When are you coming back? We have that luncheon with my father’s partners at one."

The sound of her voice—once charming and seductive—now sounded like fingernails dragging across a chalkboard.

"Don't ever call this number again, Sienna," Jake said, his voice terrifyingly cold, stripped of all emotion.

There was a brief pause on the line. "What? Jake, don't be dramatic. Is your wife throwing a little hormonal fit because you came home late?"

"My wife is gone," Jake growled, his knuckles turning white as he held the phone. "And if you ever come near me, my home, or my family again, I will personally ruin every deal your father’s firm has in this state. We are done."

He hung up without waiting for a response and instantly blocked her number.

Jake stood up, brushing off his wrinkled suit pants, a dark, desperate determination taking root in his chest. Emily thought he was going to sign divorce papers and let her vanish. She thought he was the hollow, arrogant monster he had acted like for the past three months.

He was going to prove her wrong. Even if he had to tear down the entire city to find her.
