Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Santa BarbaraThree weeks passed. Three weeks of living hell.

Jake’s life dissolved into a blur of grey, sleepless days. He stopped going to the office, leaving the operations of Carter Development to his executives. He stopped sleeping in the master bedroom, choosing instead to lie on the floor of the empty nursery, staring at the faint outlines of the letters H A R P E R on the wall.
He hired top forensic accountants—not to fight Emily, but to audit his own life. He transferred seventy percent of his liquid shares into an irrevocable trust for Harper, signed over the title of the Pasadena mansion to Emily, and completely severed his company’s lucrative financial partnerships with Sienna Brooks' father.
The retaliation from Sienna's family was brutal. They pulled twelve million dollars in investment capital, leaking rumors to the press that Carter Development was collapsing under scandal. Jake didn't care. Let it burn. None of it meant anything without Emily.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, unable to stand the silence of his home any longer, Jake drove two hours up the coast to Santa Barbara.
He parked his car outside the small, sun-drenched vineyard where they had been married six years ago. The vines were lush and green, glistening under the light rain.
He walked up the wooden steps to the open-air pavilion, remembering the way Emily had looked walking down the aisle in her lace dress, her eyes shining with tears of pure joy.
“I promise to love you, honor you, and choose you every single day,” he had sworn to her in front of two hundred people.
He had broken every word of that vow.
"I thought I might find you here."
Jake whirled around. Standing near the stone archway of the pavilion, holding an umbrella, was Evelyn Sterling—Emily’s mother.
"Evelyn," Jake breathed, stepping forward desperately. "Evelyn, please... how is she? How is Emily? Is the baby okay?"
Evelyn looked at him with dark, tired eyes. She didn't look angry; she looked profoundly disappointed, which hurt infinitely more.
"The baby is fine, Jake," Evelyn said quietly. "Emily’s blood pressure stabilized once she moved away from that toxic mansion. She's resting."
"Where is she?" Jake begged, tears brimming in his eyes. "Evelyn, I'm begging you on my knees. Just let me see her for five minutes. Let me apologize. I broke everything, I know I did, but I love her! I have never stopped loving her!"
Evelyn walked slowly over to him, looking up at his haggard, bearded face and hollow eyes.
"You didn't love her enough to choose her over your ego, Jake," Evelyn said softly. "Emily spent three months crying herself to sleep, holding her stomach, waiting for you to come home and tell her the truth. She gave you ninety chances to confess. Ninety days to look at her and choose your child over a cheap thrill."
"I know," Jake sobbed, dropping to his knees on the wooden floor of the pavilion, unconcerned with the rain spraying over him. "I know I'm a monster. But please... don't let her erase me completely."
Evelyn stared down at her son-in-law, letting out a long, heavy sigh. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, printed photograph.
She held it out to him.
Jake reached out with trembling hands and took it. It was a black-and-white ultrasound image. There, clearly defined, was the profile of a perfect, tiny baby girl, her small thumb resting near her mouth.

Written across the bottom in Emily's handwriting was a note: Harper Grace Carter. Due in three weeks.
"She sent me to deliver your legal notices," Evelyn whispered. "But I wanted you to see this first. If you truly want to save what's left of your soul, Jake... stop fighting her lawyers. Start becoming the man that child deserves."
