Chapter 7 - The Sweetest LegacyThe grand ballroom of the Palazzo Visconti in Milan glittered under thousands of crystal chandeliers, filled with politicians, bankers, high-society elites, and the most dangerous syndicate bosses in southern Europe.

Yet, when the heavy mahogany doors swung open and Luca Moretti stepped into the room, every conversation died instantly.
The silence wasn't born out of fear this time—though the fear was still there, woven deep into the fabric of his terrifying reputation. It was born out of sheer, undeniable awe.
Because walking beside him, holding his hand with an easy, unshakeable grace, was Sophia.
She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her curves, her dark curls cascading over her bare shoulders, a diamond pendant sparkling at her throat. She didn't look like a terrified hostage or an awkward, clumsy outsider. She looked like a queen ruling beside her king.
As they walked toward the head table, a prominent Milanese real estate developer—a man known for his arrogant dismissal of anyone outside his inner circle—stepped into their path with a raised champagne flute.
"Moretti," the man smiled, his eyes flickering nervously up at Luca’s towering frame before dropping dismissively to Sophia. "I hear rumors your new bride is a baker from America. Quite a... unique choice for a man of your stature. One wonders how she handles the social demands of our circle."
The entire ballroom held its breath. Several syndicate capos near the bar reached instinctively inside their jackets, waiting for Luca to explode into violence.
Luca’s jaw tightened. A dark, dangerous shadow flickered in his eyes. He opened his mouth to deliver a verbal execution that would have stripped the developer of his assets and his dignity before midnight.
Before Luca could speak, Sophia stepped half a step forward.
She looked up at the arrogant developer with a sweet, blindingly bright smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"Oh, I handle social demands just fine, signore," Sophia said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "I spend my days managing delicate ingredients, baking things that rise under immense pressure, and dealing with oversized pests who don't know when they're out of their depth."
A sharp intake of breath rippled through the crowd.
Sophia didn't stop there. She reached out, delicately adjusting the lapel of the developer's expensive Italian tuxedo with her fingertips, her expression as sweet as a pastry chef icing a wedding cake.
"And as for my husband's stature," Sophia continued, her hazel eyes locking onto the trembling man with absolute, terrifying confidence, "he happens to be the only man in Italy big enough to protect what's his, and smart enough not to let a little flour intimidate him. Good evening to you."
She turned smoothly, pulling Luca along with her toward the head table as if she hadn't just verbally dismantled one of the most powerful men in Milan in ten seconds flat.
Luca stood frozen for a fraction of a second. Then, a slow, magnificent smile broke across his face—the first real, unfiltered smile he had ever worn in public in his entire life.
He pulled out her velvet chair at the head table, seating her with the utmost gentleness before taking his own seat beside her.
Across the ballroom, Elena watched from a distance, raising her champagne glass in a silent toast to the woman who had not only survived her brother’s world, but had completely conquered it.
As the orchestra struck up a rich, sweeping waltz, Luca reached across the white linen tablecloth and took Sophia’s hand, lacing his massive fingers through hers.
"You destroyed him," Luca murmured, a deep, rumbling laugh shaking his chest as he pulled her onto the crowded dance floor.
"I was just being polite," Sophia replied innocently, resting her hands against his broad chest as he effortlessly swept her into the rhythm of the waltz.
"You're terrifying, Mrs. Moretti," Luca whispered, his dark eyes burning down into hers with an intensity that made the rest of the glittering ballroom melt away into nothingness.

"Good," Sophia smiled, rising up on her tiptoes to press her lips against his chin. "A giant like you needs someone brave enough to keep you out of trouble."
And as they spun together under the crystal chandeliers of Milan, wrapped in the safe, immovable circle of his arms, Sophia knew that the clumsy baker from Brooklyn had finally found her forever home—right in the middle of a mafia storm.
