Chapter 6 - The Sweetest VictoryThree months later, the mountain estate above Lake Como looked entirely different.

The grim, intimidating stone facade was still there, but the interior had undergone a quiet, radical revolution. The cold, austere hallways now smelled of freshly baked vanilla brioche, sourdough bread, and roasted coffee beans.

In the massive, professional-grade kitchen of the estate, Sophia stood on a small wooden step stool, carefully dusting a towering, three-tier wedding cake with powdered sugar. The cake was a masterpiece of white chocolate ganache, wild mountain berries, and delicate spun-sugar lace that caught the bright spring sunlight pouring through the high kitchen windows.

Behind her, the heavy oak door creaked open.

A massive shadow fell across the white marble island. A pair of large, warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind, lifting her effortlessly off the step stool as if she weighed nothing at all, and setting her gently down on the floor.

"Luca! I was frosting the top tier!" Sophia protested playfully, turning around in his arms and looking up at him with a grin.

Luca Moretti looked down at her, his dark eyes sparkling with a warmth and contentment that no one in the syndicate had ever thought possible. He was wearing a simple black t-shirt that clung tightly to his massive chest, the white scar on his left shoulder completely faded to a faint silver line.

"The top tier can wait," Luca murmured, his voice deep and rumbling against her ear as he rested his chin on the top of her head. "Marco is waiting outside with the delivery van. The mayor’s anniversary gala in Milan starts in two hours, and if we don't leave now, the entire city's elite is going to riot without your lemon tarts."

"Let them riot," Sophia laughed, tilting her head back to kiss his jaw. "My tarts are worth waiting for."

"Everything you make is worth waiting for," Luca whispered, capturing her lips in a slow, deep kiss that made her knees turn to water.

Life on the mountain hadn't become a fairy tale overnight. The syndicate still had rivals, the Moretti family still had enemies lurking in the shadows of Italy, and the world outside the iron gates remained as dangerous and cutthroat as ever.

Only last month, a rival boss from Turin had tried to send a message by intercepting one of their supply trucks, testing whether the newly married mafia king had gone soft.

Luca hadn't gone soft. He had dismantled the Turin operation in forty-eight hours, leaving no doubt across the entire peninsula that touching anything belonging to the Moretti household was a death sentence. But when he came home that night, covered in the dust of a ruined warehouse, he had washed his hands carefully at the kitchen sink, walked into the pantry where Sophia was kneading sourdough, and simply rested his heavy head in the crook of her neck until the adrenaline faded.

He didn't have to pretend to be invincible around her anymore. His size, his strength, his terrifying power—to the world, those were weapons. But to Sophia, they were just the safe, immovable walls of a home she had built from scratch.

"Are you ready, mia cara?" Luca asked, stepping back and offering her his large, calloused hand.

Sophia looked down at her flour-dusted hands, then up at her giant husband—the man every woman in Italy had rejected out of fear, the man who had caught her when she tripped over a suitcase and held her heart with the same gentleness he used to crush his enemies.

She smiled, slipping her small hand entirely inside his massive palm.

"Always," Sophia said. "Let's go show Milan what happens when a baker marries a mountain."
