Chapter 5 - The Confession in the LibraryThe grand library of the Moretti estate was a cavernous sanctuary of leather-bound books, dark mahogany shelves, and a roaring stone fireplace that cast long, amber shadows across the Persian rugs.

Elena sat rigidly in a high-backed leather armchair near the fire, her hands tightly folded in her lap. Her sharp cheekbones were stark in the firelight, and her eyes were fixed on the double doors as if she were waiting for an executioner.
When the heavy oak doors swung open, Luca stepped into the room.
He didn't run. He didn't shout. But the absolute, suffocating silence that accompanied his entrance was far more terrifying than any explosion. Behind him walked Sophia, carrying a tray with two cups of hot black coffee and a small plate of biscotti she had somehow managed to find in the estate's sprawling kitchens.
Luca stopped twenty feet from his sister’s chair. His left shoulder was wrapped in clean white gauze beneath his ruined shirt, adding a stark, dangerous reality to his towering presence.
"Elena," Luca’s voice was chillingly calm, flat and devoid of all familial warmth. "Talk."
Elena swallowed hard, her chin lifting with a stubborn, defensive pride that ran deep in the Moretti bloodline. "I didn't invite them here, Luca. If that's what you think."
"You knew they were coming," Luca countered, taking one slow, deliberate step forward. "You knew the men who hunted Sophia’s father were tracking her to this estate. You knew they intended to use her as leverage against our family name. And you said nothing."
"Because if I told you, you would have locked her away in a secure safehouse and canceled the wedding!" Elena snapped, her voice finally breaking, tears of frustration shimmering in her eyes as she stood up from the armchair. "You've been alone for ten years, Luca! Every woman who ever looked at you ran away screaming the moment you stood up from a chair. I saw how you looked at her in the foyer—you were already bracing for her to reject you! I wanted her to know what she was walking into so she could make a real choice!"
Sophia set the coffee tray quietly on a side table, walking over to stand beside Luca. She didn't interrupt, letting brother and sister hash out years of protective suffocation and misplaced loyalty.
"You risked her life to test her loyalty to me?" Luca’s voice rose, vibrating with cold fury. "That wasn't protecting her, Elena. That was gambling with a bullet."
"I knew Marco and your security detail would handle them," Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she dropped her gaze to the Persian rug. She looked suddenly small—a younger sister terrified of losing the monolithic older brother who had raised her like a father after their parents were gunned down in Naples fifteen years ago. "I just... I couldn't bear to watch another woman walk out on you, Luca. I couldn't watch you break again."
The silence in the library grew heavy, thick with the weight of old grief and unspoken trauma.
Luca stood frozen. The rage that had fueled him through the chapel gunfight slowly dissipated, leaving behind the heavy, hollow ache of a man who realized his sister’s terrible gamble was born out of a desperate, twisted love for him.
He took a slow, heavy breath, his massive shoulders slumping slightly. He closed the distance between them, reaching out his large, heavy hands to grip Elena by her shoulders.
"Never," Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion, staring down into his sister’s tear-filled eyes. "Never put a price on an innocent life again, Elena. Not for me. Not for this family. If someone wants to walk away from me, I will let them walk. But I will not let you or anyone else turn my wife into a pawn."
Elena let out a ragged sob, throwing her arms around Luca’s waist and burying her face against his chest. Luca wrapped his massive arms around her, completely enveloping her small frame in a fierce, protective embrace that bridged the chasm between them.
Sophia watched them from across the rug, a quiet, bittersweet smile touching her lips. She picked up one of the coffee cups, blowing softly across the steaming dark liquid.
