Chapter 4 - The Transformation of Claire BennettBy 5:00 A.M., the storm outside had settled into a gentle, sunlit dawn, painting the high arched windows of the estate in sweeping tapestries of rose, gold, and deep sapphire.

I remained sitting in the warm armchair near the hearth, the cashmere blanket still wrapped around my shoulders, watching the orange embers flicker in the stone fireplace.
Adrian sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing the encrypted logs recovered from Dean's satellite phone. Beside his desk stood his top litigation attorney, Bridget Colton, and his chief medical director, Dr. Marcus Vance.
Adrian looked up from his screen, his storm-gray eyes settling on me.
"Dr. Vance," Adrian instructed calmly. "Examine Claire. Ensure she receives a full physical evaluation, proper rest, and specialized care for the bruising on her wrists from the kitchen incident three weeks ago."
"Right away, Don Adrian," Dr. Vance replied with a respectful bow.
I stood up nervously, pulling the blanket tight around my chest. "Mr. Moretti... I can go back to the servants' wing now. I need to prepare the breakfast tables—"
"You are not going back to the servants' wing, Claire," Adrian interrupted smoothly, standing up from his desk and walking over to stand beside me.
I blinked, my pale blue eyes wide with confusion. "I... I'm not?"
"No," Adrian stated, every word dropped with absolute, unyielding authority. "As of five o'clock this morning, you are no longer a housekeeper at this estate."
My heart plummeted into my stomach. A cold panic flared in my chest. "Mr. Moretti... please! Don't fire me! I need the job for my mother's care—"
"I am not firing you, Claire," Adrian corrected softly, a faint, rare smile touching his severe, handsome face. He took my hand—my small, trembling hand—and held it between his large, warm palms. "I am appointing you as the Executive Administrator of the Moretti Family Foundation."
I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "Executive... Administrator?"
Bridget Colton stepped forward, opening a crisp leather binder bound by gold seals. "Under Don Adrian's personal decree, Miss Bennett, you will oversee our fifty-million-dollar philanthropic endowment dedicated to providing free legal aid, safe housing, and medical defense for working-class women across New York. Your starting salary is three hundred thousand dollars annually, with full corporate housing and private security provided."
Tears, hot and overwhelming, spilled over my lashes once more—not tears of terror or exhaustion, but of pure, breathless shock and profound relief.
"Adrian..." I whispered, using his first name for the first time. "Why... why would you do this for me?"

Adrian looked into my pale blue eyes, his thumb gently smoothing over my knuckles.
"Because four nights ago, a brave woman slept on a cold marble floor with a fireplace poker to protect her dignity," Adrian answered, his voice thick with a husband's future reverence. "And tonight, she saved my life."
