Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the PastThat afternoon, the illusion of my old life crumbled into dust, replaced by a storm I never expected to weather.

Just as Lily settled down for her afternoon nap in the small bedroom, a frantic pounding shook our apartment door. Not the controlled, deliberate knock of Giovanni, but desperate, frantic blows.
I pulled the door open to find Tyler standing in the hallway. He looked like a man who had completely unraveled. His suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes bloodshot and wild. He tried to force his way inside, but I planted my feet firmly in the doorway, blocking his path.
"Get out of here, Tyler," I said, my voice ice-cold.
"Jessica, you have to help me!" he sobbed, grabbing the edge of the doorframe. "Fierro’s people—they froze everything! My bank accounts, my company cards, my apartment lease! They're saying I forged your signature on federal documents! I'm going to prison, Jess! You have to call him off!"
"Call him off?" I repeated, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "For five years, you told me I was a burden, a failure, a mistake holding you back from your brilliant future. You abandoned me while I was pregnant, and you spent every day since trying to grind me down into the dirt."
"I was young! I was stupid!" Tyler cried, tears streaming down his cheeks as he fell to his knees in the hallway. "Please! Just tell him we're still legally connected, tell him it was a misunderstanding—"
"We haven't been legally connected in four years, Tyler," a deep, chilling voice echoed from behind him down the stairwell.
Giovanni stepped onto our landing, flanked by two towering security guards in dark suits. He didn't raise his voice, but the mere sound of his footsteps made Tyler flinch violently.
"Mr. Miller," Giovanni said, looking down at my kneeling ex-husband with supreme indifference. "Trespassing, harassment, and violation of a federal restraining order issued thirty minutes ago. You really don't know when to stop digging your own grave, do you?"
Tyler scrambled backward on the hallway carpet, scrambling to his feet. "This is a setup! She trapped me! She used you—!"
Giovanni raised his hand slightly. One of the security guards stepped forward, clamping a heavy hand onto Tyler’s shoulder.
"Take him down to the federal marshals waiting in the lobby," Giovanni instructed calmly. "And ensure his passport is flagged immediately."
"No! Please! Jessica, don't let him do this!" Tyler screamed as he was dragged down the concrete stairs, his cries echoing fading into the silence of the building.
I watched him go, feeling not an ounce of pity, only a profound, liberating emptiness where years of fear and resentment used to live.
Giovanni waited until the heavy metal fire door slammed shut below before turning his attention back to me. He stepped inside the apartment, closing the door softly behind him.
"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice softening as he searched my face for any sign of distress.
"I'm better than alright," I whispered, resting my back against the kitchen counter. I looked down at the platinum ring sparkling on my left hand. "I just realized... I don't think I ever took this off since you put it on my finger last night."

Giovanni stepped right up to me, trapping me gently between his arms as he rested his hands on the counter on either side of my hips.
"Good," he murmured, his amber eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade away. "Because I have no intention of ever letting you take it off."
