Chapter 1 - The Silence of the BallroomThe heavy cut-crystal chandelier above the Bellmont Grand’s ballroom seemed to mock me, casting a blinding, fragmented light across the sea of white roses and expensive champagne flutes. Three minutes prior, I had been sitting alone at Table Twelve—affectionately dubbed by my cousin Sandra as the "overflow family zone"—trying desperately not to let my mascara run onto my cheap department-store blouse.

My five-year-old daughter, Lily, was miles away in our cramped one-bedroom apartment, cared for by my best friend because children were supposedly "too disruptive" for high-society receptions. I had stayed for one reason only: the promise of taking home a slice of wedding cake wrapped in a napkin.
Then Tyler had appeared.
My ex-husband. The man who had vanished three days after I told him I was pregnant, only to return years later wrapped in the arm of Sandra, my ambitious, venomous cousin. His words still burned in my chest: "You should have become a doctor... now you work double shifts and raise a kid in a studio apartment... She didn't throw her future away." Beside him, Vanessa had placed her manicured hands over her rounded, pregnant belly and smiled—a cruel, calculated gesture designed to remind me of everything I had supposedly lost.
Before my legs could give out beneath me, a stranger materialized from the shadow of the velvet drapes.
Tall. Dark hair touched with silver at the temples. A faint, razor-thin scar cut across his square jawline. He moved through the crowded ballroom with an effortless, predatory grace that made the wealthy elites part before him like water.
He stopped beside my chair, his amber eyes locking onto mine, and extended a gloved hand.
"Finja que é minha esposa. Dance comigo."
He had known my name, my age, my profession, and my daughter's name before I had even spoken a single word. When he introduced himself as Giovanni Fierro, the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. An older real estate magnate at the neighboring table choked on his vintage Pinot Noir, and a society matron dropped her crystal flute, shattering it against the marble floor.
I knew nothing of Chicago's underworld empires, corporate dynasties, or the fear that single name commanded. But as I placed my trembling hand in his—counting down from ten—and let him lead me toward the center of the polished mahogany dance floor, I realized that Tyler’s smug expression had completely vanished.

As Giovanni pulled me flush against his chest, his hand resting securely at my waist, the whispering crowd fell into an absolute, suffocating silence. Every eye in the Bellmont Grand was glued to us. And for the first time in five years, I wasn't the invisible, broken single mother tucked away near the kitchen doors. I was standing next to the most dangerous, untouchable man in the city.
And Tyler was watching every single second of it.
