Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the Edge of the FloorTyler didn't wait for the song to end. He broke through the perimeter guard of the dance floor, ignoring the gasps of the surrounding guests, and lunged toward us with a look of frantic, unhinged fury on his face.

"Jessica! What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Tyler shouted, his voice cracking as he reached out to grab my bare arm.

He never made contact.

Before Tyler’s fingers could graze my skin, Giovanni had stepped smoothly in front of me, his movements blurring with sudden, coiled lethality. With one hand, Giovanni caught Tyler’s wrist in an iron grip, stopping him dead in his tracks. With the other, he casually held his crystal glass of champagne, never spilling a single drop.

The ballroom music continued to play, but every conversation within fifty feet died instantly.

Tyler winced, his face contorting in pain as Giovanni’s grip tightened. "Let go of me! You have no idea who I am—I'm a senior partner at—"

"You're a minor disturbance," Giovanni interrupted, his voice frighteningly calm, devoid of any anger or malice. "And you are currently standing within arm's reach of my wife."

The word hung in the air like a dropped guillotine blade. Wife.

Vanessa pushed her way through the crowd behind Tyler, her face flushed with humiliation and rage. "That's a lie!" she shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She's a single mother living in a roach-infested studio! She was married to Tyler for five minutes before he realized what a dead-weight she was! She doesn't know men like—"

Vanessa stopped abruptly.

She had finally looked up into Giovanni’s face. She had finally recognized the crest cufflinks, the specific tailoring of his suit, and the terrifying reputation attached to the Fierro name in Chicago's high-finance and industrial sectors.

Color drained from Vanessa’s face so fast she swayed backward, catching herself against her mother’s shoulder.

"Mr... Mr. Fierro," Vanessa stammered, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "We didn't... we had no idea—"

"Clearly," Giovanni said coldly. He turned his attention back to Tyler, who was still whimpering under the pressure on his wrist. "Your ex-wife spent five years raising a child alone while you climbed corporate ladders built on stolen capital and predatory loans. I suggest you take your pregnant fiancée, turn around, and walk out those double doors before I decide to repossess every asset your firm currently leases from my holding company."

Tyler’s eyes widened in sheer terror. He knew the rumors. Everyone in Chicago knew what happened to corporate partners who crossed paths with Giovanni Fierro.

"I'm sorry," Tyler choked out, his arrogance entirely shattered. "We're leaving. Right now. I'm sorry, Jessica."

Giovanni released Tyler’s wrist with a dismissive flick, as if swatting away an annoying insect. Tyler stumbled backward, grabbed Vanessa by the arm, and practically dragged her through the parting crowd toward the exit, refusing to look back even once.

The silence in the ballroom was absolute.

Giovanni turned back to me, the lethal edge in his posture vanishing instantly, replaced by a calm, steady attentiveness. He offered me his arm.

"Shall we finish our dance, Mrs. Fierro?"
