Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Miller ConstructionBy 8:00 AM on Christmas morning, the sun rose bright and clear over Lancaster, painting the snow-covered grounds of the Vance Estate in brilliant tapestries of sparkling gold and sapphire blue.

Inside the grand living room, seven-year-old Lily woke up in a soft, sunlit bedroom wearing brand-new fleece pajamas that Thomas had rushed to buy from a 24-hour retail store the night before.
When Lily walked down the grand mahogany staircase, holding Maya's hand, her brown eyes went as wide as saucers.
Standing beside the fifteen-foot Christmas tree in the living room was Arthur, wearing a comfortable wool sweater, holding a warm cup of coffee. Beneath the tree were dozens of brightly wrapped presents—dolls, drawing sets, winter coats, boots, and storybooks—that Arthur and Thomas had spent three hours assembling from the estate's private holiday storage vaults.
"Is... is all of this for us, Mommy?" Lily whispered, her small voice trembling with pure, magical wonder.
Arthur knelt down on the rug so his gray eyes were level with Lily's. "Santa Claus leaves special deliveries for brave girls who love chocolate chip pancakes, Lily," Arthur beamed warmly. "Go ahead. Open them."
As Lily ran toward the tree with bright, silver laughter filling the once-silent mansion, Maya stood near the fireplace, weeping soft tears of pure, overwhelming joy.
Arthur stood up, walking over to Maya, handing her a leather folder bound by red legal seals.
"What is this, Mr. Vance?" Maya asked, wiping her eyes.
"Last night, Maya," Arthur revealed softly, his baritone dropping into a serious, protective register, "you mentioned that your late husband died on a construction project four months ago, and his employer's insurance claim was denied."
Maya nodded slowly. "His name was David. He worked for Miller Commercial Developments."
Arthur’s gray eyes narrowed into dark, icy slate.
"I know James Miller," Arthur stated flatly. "He is a ruthless, predatory contractor who routinely cuts safety corners, shortchanges his workers' families, and uses corrupt legal teams to deny legitimate wrongful-death benefits."
Arthur opened the leather folder, revealing a certified document from the state workers' compensation board.
"I spent two hours on the phone this morning with my chief corporate litigation attorney, Rachel Hayes," Arthur announced. "We pulled the official OSHA safety reports from David's accident site. Miller Construction deliberately bypassed mandatory scaffolding safety harnesses to save twelve thousand dollars."

Maya gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "They... they lied to me! They told me David was careless!"
"They lied to a grieving widow to protect their profit margins," Arthur corrected with cold, razor-sharp authority. "James Miller thinks he can bully a defenseless mother. He is about to learn what happens when Arthur Vance steps into the fight."
