Chapter 1 - The Descent into the UnknownThe cabin of the Boeing 737 filled with the low roar of reverse thrusters as the aircraft touched down on the tarmac at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.

She sat up quickly, her face flushing crimson. “I am so sorry, Mr. Prescott,” she stammered, frantically brushing down the front of her blouse. “I didn't mean to pass out like that. You must have cramps all down your arm.”
Adrian lowered his gaze to her, a faint, weary smile touching the corners of his mouth. He gently rolled his shoulder, stretching the tight muscles without a single sign of irritation. “Don’t worry about it, Elena. Like I told you, I’ve survived much worse boardroom battles than a tired mother sleeping on my coat.”
Lily stirred in her lap, letting out a soft, sleepy yawn before burying her face back into Elena’s chest. The little girl was completely oblivious to the fact that her mother had just spent two hours sleeping against one of the most powerful and elusive billionaires in the country.
Before Elena could process the sheer absurdity of her situation—that she, a runaway mother fleeing an abusive marriage with a few hundred dollars to her name, had just used a tech tycoon as a human pillow—the forward galley curtain parted.
A flight attendant in a pristine uniform hurried down the aisle, bypassing the other passengers who were already unbuckling their seatbelts and reaching for their overhead bags. She stopped directly at Row 14, her expression a mix of professional deference and nervous urgency.
“Mr. Prescott,” the flight attendant said in a hushed, reverent tone, keeping her eyes fixed respectfully on Adrian. “Your security detail has coordinated with the airport authority. They have a private tarmac vehicle waiting by gate Bravo-12. We can expedite your deplaning through the forward service stairs if you wish to avoid the main terminal crush.”
Adrian let out a slow, heavy sigh, running a hand over his trimmed beard. He looked less like a conqueror of industries and more like a man walking toward a firing squad. “Thank you, Sarah. Let’s stick to the regular jet bridge. I don't need any more spectacle than necessary today.”
“Understood, sir.” The flight attendant nodded sharply, then cast a curious glance at Elena and little Lily before retreating back toward the front.
Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs. The name Adrian Prescott wasn't just a familiar moniker in business circles; it was a titan legacy. The Prescott Group controlled major telecommunications infrastructure, digital banking networks, and massive commercial real estate portfolios spanning from New York to Singapore. Men like Adrian Prescott didn't fly commercial unless their private jets were in overhaul, and they certainly didn't let exhausted strangers rest their heads on their bespoke designer jackets.
“You’re… that Adrian Prescott,” Elena whispered again, the reality finally sinking through the fog of her exhaustion.
“Guilty as charged,” Adrian replied quietly, his dark eyes shifting back to meet hers. There was no arrogance in his gaze, only a profound, naked vulnerability that caught her completely off guard. “And for the record, Elena, sitting here with you and your daughter was the most peaceful two hours I’ve logged in five years.”
Before Elena could formulate a reply, the phone in Adrian’s hand buzzed violently against his palm. A string of incoming push notifications lit up the OLED screen, flashing silent warnings in red and amber.
Adrian glanced down at the display. The easy, relaxed posture he had maintained throughout the flight vanished in a fraction of a second. His jaw muscles locked into hard, rigid lines.
“What is it?” Elena asked, an icy chill creeping up her spine. “Is something wrong?”
Adrian slowly looked up from the screen, his gaze dark and piercing. “Elena… someone was asking questions about you before we even landed.”
The words hung in the pressurized air of the cabin like a death sentence.
“Me?” Elena’s voice caught in her throat. “That’s impossible. No one knows I’m on this flight. I didn't tell a single soul except my cousin in Pasadena, and she doesn't even know what airline I booked.”
“My private security network feeds real-time digital intelligence straight to my encrypted terminal,” Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, urgent whisper as the seatbelt sign chimed and passengers began standing up around them. “Three minutes before touchdown, a high-priority data query was executed across the Texan aviation database. Someone cross-referenced your passport number with incoming flight manifests from Monterrey.”
Elena felt the blood drain entirely from her face. The small amount of air in her lungs felt suddenly insufficient.
There was only one person in the world who possessed the malice, the resources, and the burning obsession to track her down the moment she crossed the border.
Ethan.
Her ex-husband. The man who had locked her out of their home, wiped their joint accounts, and replaced her with a younger woman as if she were a piece of outdated office furniture. He had always boasted about his connections in private investigative firms and corporate security circles. He hadn't just let her leave; he was hunting her.
“He found me,” Elena whispered, her hands tightening protectively around Lily. “My God, he’s already here.”

Adrian didn't hesitate. He stood up from his seat, his presence suddenly filling the cramped aisle with undeniable authority. He reached up, effortlessly pulling Elena’s heavy carry-on bags down from the overhead bin before she could even lift her arms.
“He hasn't found you yet,” Adrian said, his voice a steady anchor in the rising chaos of the deplaning crowd. He slipped his hand under her elbow, guiding her firmly toward the aisle. “And as long as you’re with me, Ethan Walker, or whoever is looking for you, is going to find out that barking up this particular tree is a fatal mistake.”
